If you missed the gospel
stage play ‘I Won’t Be the
Other Woman’, you definitely
should have given up the
dinero for a front row seat.
Written and produced by
Angela Barrow-Dunlap,
founder and president of
Faith Entertainment LLC,
and directed by NAACP Im
age Award recipient David
Whitfield, who also appears
as Henry Davenport, ‘lWon’t
Be the Other Woman’ was a
plot of gripping truth and a
performance of sheer talent.
The play centers around
Omar and Lisa Davenport,
‘the married couple, both at
torneys who have thelife that
some only wish for. Their
only son has been sent off to
college and they are ready to
be alone again only to iove
each other. They are finally
alone when Omar’s father
dies and his mother, Jude is
‘alone. Not wanting his
mother tothink that hecan’t
take care of her, he moves
her in to his and Lisa’s home
without discussing the mat
ter with his wife beforehand.
ItisobviousthatJudedoesn’t
think Lisa is good enough
for ‘her Omar’ even after 29
years and is set on breaking
up the marriage. Omar only
makes the situation worse
when he chooses to get in
volved in an affair with an
other woman.
The play reaches its climax
when Lisa, portrayed by gos
pel sensation Wanda Nero
Butler is faced with the deci
sion to be there for Omar
when his father is in a car
accident and face Jude or sit
at home and wait. She prays
and cries out the Lord to help
her and she decides to be
there for her man. Omar’s
father Henry diesand things
change.
Anthony ‘A. K.’ King gives
agreat performance of a cer
tified ‘mama’s boy’. His love
for his mother clouds his
judgementin his marriage. A
brief monologue he gives
proof of just that. “First you
heart. =
“Iwassobusy. Beingawriter
is a full-time profession. I just
couldn’t do both. (Psychology
and write),” she said. “Since I
had written that (Build Your
House) and went through the
effort. I said ‘Let me pull out
my other book.” I wanted to
get both of them out at the
sametime.”
Butler has always been a
writer, starting with poetry at
the mere age of six. She com

and I asked you to be my
wife. You became my fiancé’,

changes. You could be my ex

is still gonna be my mama.
That will never change.”
Omar fails to realize that
his mother can’t be his wife
and his wife can’t be his
mother. His struggle to sepa

affair with his secretary, Tay

Pam and Dodi).
The plot thickens as Jude
and Lisa argue constantly
and the bickering causes Lisa
to pack her bags and leave.
Omar is a wreck; close to
paranoia because his wife
won’t come home. Omar’s

Charlie Wilson gave a
strong performance, getting

play. ‘
Vanessa Bell Armstrong’s
appearance was briefbut riv

some audience members to

with endearingsoulful songs,
a energetic, hilarious cast,
and a lively audience. The
Heritage Entertainment
Group should bring more gos

The cast also included Vic
