AUGUSTA FOCUS
Fire chief is chosen
Beard then quoted the sala
ries of chiefs from neighboring
communities: $72,000 in Co
lumbus, Ga.; $66,000in Aiken,
S.C.; $74,000 in Macon, Ga.
Former Augusta fire chief
Ronnie Few only made SBO,OOO,
he said.
“Iwould be glad to have Mr.
Gillespie here if the adminis
trator could work out some
thing comparable within the
range of what we’vehad in the
past,” Beard said.
Kolb defended the salary as
reasonable. “If you look at
comparable communities our
size, with our size fire depart
ment —the number of sta
tions that are managed, etcet
era— I believe it is appropri
ate compensation,” Kolb said.
“Mr. Gillespie is looking at
takingeither alateral moveor
taking a slight cut from his
current position in Yakima,
Wash. Which, I might add, is
smaller than Augusta.”
Commissioner Bobby
Hankerson, lauded this past
week for getting hiscolleagues
together on this issue, said
that he and Kolb had negoti
ated Gillespieall theway down
from $98,000. He pointed out,

also, that Columbia, S.C. pays
their chief $95,000.
“Thesalaryrangethat we're
talkingabout todayisbetween
$67,000 to $102,468,”
Hankerson said. “That’s the
salary range for a fire chief.”
Hesaid, also, that thelonger
the commission waits to de
cide on a fire chief, the higher
the salary range will climb.
“At this time we need to settle
this matter toget thisfire chief
on board,” Hankerson said. “I
think the price, the cost, that
wehave, I thinkit’s very good.
It was already budgeted for a
fire chief. I hope that today
that my colleagues will be will
ing to put this behind us and
we can go ahead and do this.”
He asked his colleagues to
consider the future.
“Inthefuture,” hesaid, “I'm
quite sure that we want pro
fessional people to come to
Augusta, Ga. If we want quali
fied people, whether they’'re
here in the city or whether
they are out of state, we are
going to have to look at the
cost.”
