AFCEA offers scholarships
Asthelocal representative ofthe Armed
Forces Communications and Electronics
Association (AFCEA), the Augusta-Fort
Gordon Chapter is committed to encour
aging the study of electronic, engineer
ing, and computer sciences by Augusta
area students. The chaptér accomplishes
thisgoal by awarding SI,OOO scholarships
to deserving graduating high school se
niors and full-time college students pur
suing degrees from accredited institu
tions in engineering studies or electronic
sciences.
Miller to Receive Prestigious ‘lron
Mike’ Award from Marine Corps League
The Marine Corps League will give its
prestigious “Military Order of the Iron
Mike” award to U.S. Senator Zell Miller
(D-Ga.) on Saturday , February 9.
This annual award is presented to the
person whom the Marine Corps League
believes has contributed the most to the
United States and to the United State
Marine Corps. :
As Miller recounts in his book, Corps

Learned in the Marines, he had dropped
out of Emory University andlanded in the
drunk tank for a night in 1953 when he
signed up for a three-year enlistment in
the Marines. Miller calls it “the turning
point in my life.”

who served in the Marines from 1953-56
and earned the rank of sergeant before

The Iron Mike award is named after the
landmark statue, Iron Mike, the bronze
rendering of a World War I vintage Ma
rine figure familiar to thousands of Ma
rines. The statueis located at the Marine

Area middle and high school students
will gather at Augusta State University
February 23, 2002, at 9 a.m. in Washing
ton Hall for a History Day competition.
More than 200 students, the largest
number to date, are scheduled to partici
pate in the event, part of a national com
petition. The theme this year is “Revolu
tion, Reaction, Reform in History.”
“It’s a great way to encourage history
education,” said Dr. Wayne Mixon, pro
fessor of history and chair of the depart
ment of History and Anthropology.
“History education among young people
is important, not to create future histori
ans, but to create educated, informed, and
responsible citizens,” he said.
The contest takes several forms includ
ing history projects and performances,
Paine begins Upward Bound session
The Paine College Upward Bound
Project is currently accepting applica
tions for the summer session which kicks
off June 3 through July 29, 2002. Applica
tions will be accepted until March 8.
Upward Bound is a program designed to
improve academic performance and in
crease motivational levels among stu
dents. This program enables eligible
project participants to complete second
ary school and successfully pursue post
secondary education programs. Project
participants must be potential first gen
eration college students enrolled in the
high schools of Richmond County and
meet the U.S. Department of Education’s
guidelines for parent(s) income and edu
cational background.
The Paine College Upward Bound Pro
gram provides intensive instruction in
basicskills; aresidential program; educa
tional and cultural enrichment experi
ences; academic, personal, and career

incipient firefighting course
Employers who provide fire extin
guishers for employee use are required
by law to provide an appropriate educa
tional training program upon initial em
ployment, and at least annually thersaf
ter.

In previous years, the chapter has
awarded as many as twenty SI,OOO schol
arships, and it is anticipated that this
year’s awards will be equal to or greater
than previous years’ awards. The top
scoring recipient will receive the “Mallette
Scholarship Award” of $2,000.

through April 1, 2002.

Miller saw the Iron Mike statue up close
every day during his basic training at
Parris Island.
“I can remember our Drill Instructor
marching us around the Iron Mike statue
at Parris Island 49 years ago this coming
summer,” Miller said. “Little did I dream
that this evening would occur nearly half
a century later. I was too worried about
my Drill Instructor shouting, ‘Miller, stop
bouncing.”
Previous recipients of the Iron Mike
award include : John Wayne, Bob Hope,
H. Ross Perot, General Lewis W. Walt,
Senator Conrad Burns, former Senator
Chuck Robb, former Senator Dirk
Kempthorne, former Senator Dewey
Bartlett, Congressman Bill Young, and
Congressman John Murtha.
The Marine Corps League, which was
found in 1923 and charted by Congressin
1937, is a not-for-profit organization that
promotes the Marine Corps. Its 50,000
members include honorably discharged,
active duty and Reserve and retired Ma
rines.

at a banquet in Falls Church, VA.
with scheduled displays including the
treatment of women in Afghanistan and
a study of hip hop music, Mixon said.
A voluntary American history exam
for juniors and seniors is also scheduled,
he said. Those who pass it receive three
credit hours in American history if they
attend ASU after graduation.
Schools participating include Episco
pal Day School, Saint Mary on the Hill,
Spirit Creek Middle School, and Cross
Creek and Greenbrier high schools.
Awards will be announced at 2 p.m. in
Washington Hall, and winners will ad
vance tothe state competition April 27in
Macon, Ga.

In addition to accepting applications
for future Upward Bounders, the College
is also in search of former Program
members. All 1972,1552,and 1992 Paine
College Upward Bound Bridge Class
members are asked to call the Upward
Bound office by March 15 between the
hours of 9 am. and 5 p.m., Monday
through Friday, to provide updated con
tact information for the planning of the
annual 10, 20 and 30 year classreunions.
