By summer, about 17,000
homeowners in the west and
south Augustaareascan expect
to have city trash service.
The Augusta commissioners
voted unanimously during the
March 5 meeting to award new
trash contracts to low-bidding
companies, beginning a 90-
preparation period for collec
tionstostartin neighborhoods.
District 3Commissioner Steve
Shepard was concerned about
rendering service to those who
are not included in the con
tract.

Though the chamber was a
full house, only Mrs.
Burmeister, Mr. Cheeks, and
Rep. Ben Allen were in atten

with several members of the
audience. Even after numer

discuss the issues only, cer

“We do need to make sure

The new haulers will be BSI,

Alloftherepresentativesthat
were in attendance support
somekind of change to the city
government including giving
the mayor more power and
discouraging abstentions by
the commissioners.
Although all of the bills and
proposals are similar, state
officials still debate over how

the mayor having a vote or
veto power to a simple major

the changes are numerous.

Even with the continued de

promises are being discussed
and worked out.
Some Augusta commission
ers on the other hand are not
very supportive.
“How can they ask us to do'
something that they can’t do
themselves? And all of this is
designed for an election in
November,” said Commis

Commissioner Bill Kuhlke

“I think there are some good

us in a way of functioning’

“Wehad people handing out

said Rev. Walker.
Beverly Shelly, director of

“It seemed well put together.
They contacted public safety
