BCALA announces 2002 award winners
The Black Caucus of the
American Library Association,
Inc. (BCALA) announced the
winners of the 2002 BCALA
Literary Awards during the
Midwinter Meeting of the
American Library Association
(ALA) in New Orleans. The
awardsrecognize excellencein
adult fiction and nonfiction by
African American authors pub
lished in 2001. BCALA also
recognizes a first novelist, as
well asacitation for Qutstand
ing Contribution to Publish
ing. Therecipients will receive
the awards during the ALA
2002 Annual Conference in
Atlanta in June.
The winner in the fiction
category is I Wish I Had a Red
Dress by Pearl Cleage (Will
iam Morrow). Cleage artfully
depictsthestrugglesofawidow
committed to a professional
career of helping women
achieve and grow. Readers
witness the healing in the
protagonist’s personal life as
shedevelopsthe ability tomove
beyond the past, to trust again
and dares to step boldly into
the future. Cleage lives in At

Life and Times of Madame C.

is an authentic biography of
one of America’s early entre
preneurs and philanthropists.
The biography makes use of
resources, including never be

Walker family collection. The
author, who is a great-great
granddaughterofMadameC.J.
Walker, worked as a network
news producer for ABC and
NBC news. She lives in Alex
andria, Virginia.
Hoop Roots: Basketball, Race
and Love, John Edgar
Wideman’s essays form the
memoir that reflects growing
up in an urban city, poor and
Black, strengthened and sup
ported by family, particularly
his grandmother and the
pickup street game of basket
ball. Wideman teaches at the
University of Massachusetts
at Amherst.
American Patriots: The
Story of Blacks in the Military
from the Revolution to Desert
Stormby Gail Lumet Buckley
documents the contributions
of African Americansin the U.
S. military. It is an exhaus
tively researched historical
account of an often ignored
part of American military his
tory. Buckley lives in New
York City.
The recipient of the First
Novelist Award is David An
thony Durham for Gabriel’s
Story (Doubleday). Durham
offersafresh perspective of the
1870 s American West as the
teenage protagonist leaves
home on a quest for adven
ture. An outstanding story
teller, Durham writes a rivet
ingaccountoftheyoungman’s
journey. Durham divides his
timebetweenthe United States
and Scotland.
For excellence in scholar
ship, the BCALA Literary
Awards Committee presents
the Outstanding Contribution
to Publishing Citation to
Donald Bogle for Primetime
Blues: African Americans On
Network Television (Farrar,
Straus and Giroux). Bogle has
written a masterful study that
chronicles the history of Afri
can Americans in television.
Bogle teaches at the Univer
sity of Pennsylvania and the
New York University’s Tisch
School of the Arts and he lives
in Manhattan. |

Garden City Music Festival calls for artists
The Greater Augusta Arts
Council (GAAC) isin search of
local and regional artists to
participate in the Fourth An
nual Garden City Music Festi
val on May 11, 2002. This
year, the festival will be ex
panded, including all the di
verse musical and artistic
styles synonymoustoourarea.
This will be the second year’
that the festival willbe held at
Riverwalk Augusta. Onestage

(SICARS) will host its Fourth
Annual Food, Jazz and Blues
Festival on Saturday, March
30, 2002, from 10 a.m. to 5
p.m. on Meridian Dock, Me
ridian, Ga.
This festival will offer a vari
ety of gourmet foods from the
Sapelo Island Gullah/Geechee
culture as well as have ven
dors selling cultural arts and

This year, the festival will
feature jazz, folk, rock and
roll, and blues entertainment
on three stages. There will be
a free children’s area with

be $5 per adult, free for chil
dren 10 years and under. En

crafts.
Music will be provided by
the well known Phil Morrison
Trio featuring Keith Wilson
and Teddy Adams. Also per
forming will be Claude Rhea
with vocalist L.C. Quarterman.
A drawing will be held with
prizes that include passes to
Walk Disney Theme Park,
weekend stays at the finest

or craft on the banks of the
