Grant helps educate women about breast cancer
AUGUSTA
The Avon Breast Care Cru
sade has awarded a $45,000
one-year grant to the Univer
sity Breast Health Center to
increase awareness of the life
saving benefits of early detec
tion of breast cancer.
The breast health program
at University will educate Au
gusta-area women and refer
them tofree mammogramsand
clinical breast exams in their
own communities. Thecenter
offers a comprehensive array
of education, diagnostic test
ing, treatment options and
support.
Every woman is at risk for
breast cancer. It is the most
common form of cancer in
women in the U.S., and the
leading single cause of death

cer Society (ACS) recommends
annual mammograms begin
ning at age 40; annual clinical
breast exams beginning at age
20; and monthly breast self
examinationsbeginningat age
20. According to the ACS, the
majority of women who don’t
comply with these guidelines
are poor and underserved
women.
“Many factors, ranging from
lack of time tonot beingaware
of screening recommenda
tions, keep women from prac
ticinggoodbreast health,” says
Pam Anderson, breast health
specialist with the University
Breast Health Center. “There
sure the continued availabil
ity for heart surgery in Au
gusta for CSRA veterans.
The collaboration between
VAMC Augustaand EAMCwill
result in a sound clinical pro
gram of sufficient numbers to
ensure availability of high
quality outcomes and excel
lent care. Both VA and DoD
have monitors in effect to as
sure continuous quality im
provement. The cardiac sur
geon team at EAMC is pre
pared to assure that the pro
gram will meet all of the re

According to Tracy Parks,
R.N., an oncology certified
nurse who recently joined the
Breast Health Center to work
with the Avon grant partici
pants, the “overall objectiveis
to improve screening and de
creasebreast cancer mortality
ratesby educatingarea women
about the importance of par
ticipating in breast cancer
screenings and examinations.
We know that early detection
increases survival and treat
ment options. We hope to
increaseaccesstobreast health
careand willbe providingedu
quirements of the Veterans
Health Administration.
Patients requiring open
heart surgery will have their
initial work upin the Cardiol
ogy Clinic at the VAMC in
consultation with EAMC sur
geons. VA patients will be
admitted to Eisenhower for
the surgery and all inpatient
care related to that surgery.
Follow up outpatient visits will
be accomplished at the Au
gustaVAMC.
Like the Neurosurgery col
laboration, the open heart
cation and screenings for at
least 500 underserved women
age 40 and older. We also will
be increasing awareness
through presentationstolocal
organizations and groups, as
well as participation in area
health fairs.”
Avon has funded more than
600 community-based pro
gramsacross the United States
during the last nine years, in
cluding the University Breast
Health Center. These pro
grams are dedicated to educat
ingunderserved women about
breast cancer and linkingthem
with early detection screening
services.
