Experience exotic culture at Japan Fest
: ATLANTA
- Japan Fest Weekend will
be held September 21-22,
2002, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
at Stone Mountain Park.
Organized by the Japan-
America Society of Georgia
(JASG) and The Japanese
Chamber of Commerce of
Georgia (JCCG), and sup
ported by the Consulate
General of Japan, Japan Fest
Weekend is the highlight of
two month-long series of
events designed to promote
understanding between
Japanese and Americans in
the Southeast.
- Since 1986, this annual
celebration of Japanese cui
ture explores Japan’s tradi
tions through authentic
demonstrations, exhibitions,
workshops and performers.
Among the featured attrac
tions of Japan Fest Weekend
are Zeßo Taiko and other
drummers; Japanese street
performer and “fantasy
dreammaker” candy artist
Masaji Terasawa, who cre
ates taffy-like edible flowers
and animals; traditional
Japanese and Okinawan
dances and koto music; sev
eral different forms of mar
tial arts demonstrations
including aikido, judo,
karate, kendo, kyudo, shink
endo and sumo; koi (carp)
competitions and bonsai dis
plays and demonstrations.
Additionally, there will be
opportunities to make washi
(Japanese paper), write in
Japanese characters, wear a
kimono, witness a tea cere
mony, play the game of igo
and learn flower arranging.

at the Japantique Road

.and inari sushi combination,
wyaki onigiri lunchbox
(assortment of rice balls
-with fried chicken), hiyashi
.chuka (ramen noodles
:topped with ham, egg, crab
:meat and vegetables), ohagi
‘(rice ball with sweet red
‘beans), taiyaki (baked wheat
‘cake with red beans),
‘korokke-pan (fried vegeta
‘bles in bread), yakisoba-pan

Local Japanese and American kids drum up a storm
in anticipation of Japan Fest. The children are wear
ing traditional festival garb, hachimaki (cloth head
gear) and happi (jackets). !
(fried egg noodles with
bread), una-don (barbequed
eel over rice) and gyuu-don
(thinly sliced beef over rice.)
Visitors can purchase
Japanese knick knacks at
the Ginza-dori, named after
Tokyo’s famous shopping
district. Items include
Japanese ceramics, tradi
tional Japanese clothing
and accessories and fun
items such as masks and
toys.
On both Saturday and
Sunday, the first 1,500 chil
dren visiting Japan Fest will
receive a free Japanese toy.
Toys include tops, marbles,
Japanese dolls, paper bal
loons and lanterns, pin
wheels, festival hats and
several other traditional
Japanese trinkets. Chil
dren can also attend kite
making workshops, try
“costumed” sumo
wrestling, build Japanese
puppets, learn origami and
join in fun games.
Several of the more than
350 Japanese businesses
located in Georgia will dis
play their products at the
Made in Georgia exposition
on both Saturday and Sun
day. Along with a display of
their products, company
representatives will be on
hand to answer questions.
This year’s Made in Georgia
