Small device has hig functions
Lexmark X 6150
(AP) Equipping a small or home
office used to cost a bit of money and a
lot of patience if you wanted the basics
— copier, fax, scanner, printer. Now
it’s around S2OO for the shooting
match, and Lexmark is offering it in
one 22-pound widget.
The Lexmark X 6150 is something to
consider for both back-to-school and
small business use. It kind of looks like
a refrigerator bin that went to design
school and came out all curvilinear in
black and gray, but it’s extremely easy
to use and comes with bundled soft
ware to handle all the necessary chores.
And it can do three of those chores
whether a PC is connected or not —
color copying, monochrome copying
and both color and monochrome fax
ing. Here’s complete training for the
copy function: (1) Place document on
glass face-down. (2) Press button. The
copy function will do up to 16 copies
per minute in back and up to 11 in
color. You can order up to 99 copies

When it’s working as a printer, it can
produce resolutions of 4800 x 1200
DPI (dots per inch) and pump it out at
up to 19 pages per minute in mono
chrome and 15 in color.
It might not be necessary to repeat two
salient caveats about print speed and res
olution, but it can’t hurt. Actual printing
speed will vary enormously, depending
upon content. And when comparing reso
lutions, compare the product of the two
numbers. So this widget, for example,
offers eight times the resolution of a
printer with 1200 x 600 DPI.
When it’s working as a flathed scanner,
it will generate 48-bit color and 16-bit
grayscale. Scanning is as simple as put
ting the document on the glass and click
ing on the “scan” icon in the Lemark
interface. When the picture is scanned,
for example, it automatically fires up the
