Georgia’s best spellers
continue march toward
state championship
ATLANTA - Young spellers
throughout Georgia are
approaching the next-to-the
last leg in the journey to crown
Georgias 2004 spelling cham
pion. “The district level Bees
are just as exciting, if not more
so in some cases, as the state
championship,” said Mer
churia Chase Williams, presi
dent of the Georgia Associa
tion of Educators (GAE). “It’s
pins and needles from this
point out.” The Atlanta Daily
World and GAE co-sponsor
the State Spelling Bee, which
decides Georgias representa
tive to the national spelling bee
sponsored by Scripps-Howard.
Williams says that from the
start of the individual school

tem, community or spelling
bee district. “The Bees not
only help students in their
spelling and reading, but they
also teach our children about
competition and how to both
win and lose graciously,” she
said. “Win or lose, these are
lessons they will carry with
them throughout their lives.”
She is quick to point out that
there are no losers because
every child who simply studies
for a Bee, bolsters his or her
spelling acumen.
The district Bees will take
place on Feb. 28, at 10 a.m.
The winners and runners-up
from each district Bee will vie
for the state championship on
March 19 at 11 a.m., at Geor
gia State University’s Student
University Center located at
44 Courtland Street in
Atlanta.
