Q¢ Can you tell me the symptoms of lung cancer and how
cigarette smoking increases the risk? D.A. Augusta, Ga.
According to Alice David,
M.D., a board-certified
oncologist who practices
at University Hospital,
the symptoms of lung
cancer include:
“smoker’s cough” that
worsens
-coughing up blood,
even very small amounts
-chest pain
-shortness of breath
-new onset of wheezing
ifepedted cases of
pneumonia or bronchitis
-hoarseness that lasts
more than two weeks
datigite, loss of
appetite or weight loss
Unfortunately, symp
toms are minimal in the
early stages of this dis
ease. "By the time most
people with lung cancer
see a physician, the dis
ease has reached an
advanced stage when it is
difficult to treat and
cure,” says Dr. David.

Expert tips for potty
training your toddler
(NAPSM)-Toddlers’
lives are full of milestones.
From first steps and potty
training to dressing and
feeding themselves, tod
dlers spend a big part of
their days navigating
through key developmen
tal milestones. One of the
greatest accomplishments
during this stage may be
gaining the independence
associated with being
potty trained.
The new Pampers Amer
ican Potty Training Poll
surveyed 1,143 mothers
with children 18-48
months and reveals that a
majority of parents feel
potty training sometimes
can be a stressful, over
whelming experience. For
some toddlers and parents
it's a snap. But, a recent
survey found that 96 per
cent of moms believe
there is no “one size fits all
approach” to potty train
ing. Instead, multiple
approaches are often
needed to help children
learn to potty train and
make learning a bit more
positive and fun.
Childcare expert Dr.
Lawrence Kutner, a
nationally known child
behavior columnist and
author, co-director of the
Harvard Medical School
Center for Mental Health
and Media, and member
of the Pampers Parenting
Institute, says that there
are many ways in which
parents can help guide
and empower their tod
risk of lung cancer, as it
accounts for 85-90 per
cent of all deaths from
the disease. Exposure to
asbestos, other carcino
gens and secondhand
smoke can also cause the
disease.
"Although lung cancer
is the leading cause of
cancer-related deaths in
the United States, it is
among the most prevent
able of all cancers," says
Dr. David. The best way
to prevent this deadly
disease is to stop smok
ing. Research has shown
that quitting smoking at
any age can significantly
lower your risk of devel
oping lung cancer.
If you'd like to stop
smoking, University
Hospital and the Ameri
can Cancer Society spon
sor a FREE four-week
smoking cessation pro
gram known as Fresh
Start. For more informa
tion or to register for the
dler through the potty
training process. “Some
children need to feel a bit
of wetness in order to
make sense of what’s
going on,” says Dr. Kut
ner. “By providing tod
dlers with a wetness cue
they have the feedback
that can help them master
this important
skill.” Engaging toddlers
in and empowering them
throughout the potty
training process can lead
to a true bonding experi
ence for parents and kids.
For potty training suc
cess, Dr. Kutner offers
parents the following
advice:
1. Wait for readiness
cues. There is no right age
for potty training. While
most of the skills needed
to master potty training
develop between 18-30
months of age, your
child’s development cues
will alert you to readiness.
Readiness signs include
sitting on the potty, walk
ing, and pulling pants on
and off.
2. Take it one step at a
time. Potty training is a

I keep hearing the
phrase "know your num
bers" related to heart
health. Exactly what does
that mean?
Your blood pressure,
lipid profile and body
mass index are important
factors in measuring
your risk of heart dis
ease. "By knowing what
ranges are acceptable and
how your numbers meas
ure against them, you
can often make lifestyle
process. Allow your child
to master each stage
before moving on to the
next. Expect and accept
that your child may have
setbacks and accidents.
Remember, potty training
is not a competition.
3. Praise your child for
success. Children, like
adults, respond to praise.
Celebrate all of your
child’s accomplishments
including sitting on the
potty for the first time,
learning to pull pants on
and off, and asking to go
to the bathroom. Look for
ways to keep it light and
fun.
