MILWAUKEE (AP) -
Miller Brewing is celebrat
ing the “50th Anniversary
of Rock ‘n’ Roll” with eight
commemorative beer cans
that feature Rolling Stone
cover shots of Elvis Presley,
Blondie and others.
What'’s missing, some say,
is a black artist.
Robert Thompson, a pro
fegsor of pop culture- at
S;ocuscf University, called
the absence “beyond con
spicuous,” because black
artists often are credited
with inventing rock ‘n’ roll.
“It would be like doing a
set of cans of six great
Impressionist painters and
not including any French
reople on it,” he said. “It
eaves out an enormous
amount.”
The promotion, which
ties rock’s anniversary to
Presley’s debut at Sun Stu
dios, also depicts Alice
Cooper, Bon Jovi, Def Lep
pard and Willie Nelson, as
well as the guitars of Eric
Clapton and Joe Walsh, on
cans being issued this sum
mer by the brewer and the
magazine.
Gary Armstrong, chief
marketing officer for
Rolling Stone " publisher
Wenner Media, said race

Farmer’s market hosts
drawing for ‘Mozart to Motown’
Thanks to the generosi
ty of actor/singer/dancer,
Russell Joel Brown, the
Saturday Farmer’s Market
on Broad will host a
drawing for three tickets
to his hit from Mozart to
Motown at the market.
The market coordinator
will draw one ticket on
August 28.
Russell will make a
special appearance at the
market on the 28th to
assist with the drawing
and to perform. “We are
so pleased to have Russell
Joel Brown at the
Farmer’s Market,” said

Mr. Carstarphen paints
scenes of Augusta that he
remembers f%om growin
up in the city. He receive§
instruction in oil and water
color painting from the late
J. Gray of Modoc, S.C. His
works have been shown
choosing the artists.
“We didn’t even con
sciously think pro or con,
the same way tfiat the only
woman on there is Blondie.
We just went with the peo
ple that we thought were
appropriate,” he said. “We
went through (the covers)
and said these people we
don’t think are appropriate,
or wouldn’t appca.lp to Miller
drinkers.”
Miller spokesman Scott
Bussen said the company
started with a broad wis[‘\,
list, but its choices were
limited to Rolling Stone cov
ers.
“I'm sure that our objec
tive was to get as diverse a
representation of musical
acts as well as diversity,” he
said.
Armstrong noted that
Rolling Stone wasn't around
for the birth of rock ‘n’ roll
— it debuted in 1967, years
after many formative black
artists of the genre emerged.

appeared on its covers

“These are the artists that
gave us approval to use their
images on the beer cans,”

Reilly said.

Main Street Augusta,

market patrons tickets
from its booth beginning
at 10 am. The ticket
holder must be present to
win. “By promoting a
phenomenal production,
we are hoping to draw
people who have not
been to the market this
year, and who will sup
port Russell. We are also
rewarding our patrons
who diligently support
the market,” said Her
rington.
According to Russell’s
website, from Mozart to
Motown “features 10
musical styles”, a band,

The Hall of Fame, which
is throwing a summer con

Miller Lite, declined to
comment on the cans. Todd
Mesek, the hall’s senior
marketing director, called
African heritage “critical” to
rock’s development.
. “Arguably all rock ‘n’ roll
came from, or at least was
greatly influenced by,
African culture,” Mesek
said. “Rock ‘n’ roll came
from R&B, jazz, folk. All
those genres chorc rock ‘n’
roll came togethcr to birth

William McKeen, chair
man of the University of
Florida journalism depart
ment and editor, of the
book “Rock and Roll is
Here to Stay,” called the list
strange.
il Fook at rock ‘n’ roll in
racial terms. Rock ‘n’ roll is
black America meeting
white Ameérica,” McKeen
said. “It’s about the merger
of white people’s music -
country — with black peo

Armstrong said each

and rock’s roots, while Alice
Cooper is “stadium rock

The artists weren’t paid to
appear on the cans,
