4B August 26, 2004 Mirit Amen Corner Biblical principles for parent-child relationships By MARY L. SULLIVAN - Special to Augusta Focus " There has been much ' controversy, resentment, “anger and even kudos regarding the recent " “words for the black com munity” by Bill Cosby. He made headlines in May of this year when he " denounced some blacks’ - grammar and said those * who commit crimes and wind up behind bars “are - not political prisoners”. - He also blamed parents * for not teaching their children how to read and . write and to speak proper + English. I agree with Mr. . Cosby’s statements and let me tell you why. s Parents have a God given responsibility to _rear or bring up their children in a manner that pleases the Lord. However, bringing them up in a biblical manner will result in the abundant blessings of God. This does not mean that every thing will always go smoothly in your lives but it means that you have a divine reference point where you can get back on track if needed. God views our children as gifts (heritage) of the Lord (Psalm 127:3). The children should be brought up according to the principles outlined in the Scriptures. (2 Timo thy 3:14-17). I believe this is what Mr. Cosby was trying to reveal to us. He realizes as many others do, (but I 341 G R Vocher Rogd, Harkm G A I have not spoken out about it) that many par ents fail to carry out this God given responsibility because we do not know what the Scriptures say relative to how we should rear our children. Parents should train up the chil dren in the discipline and instruction of the Lord (Deuteronomy 4:9, Proverbs 22:6, Ephesians 6:4 and Deuteronomy 6: 6-7). Many of the proverbs were originally addressed to young men as wisdom from their fathers to their sons. (Proverbs 1:8; 2:1; 515 11, 2%: 411). 1k the Hebrew culture, it was expected that the sons inherit leadership of the family and the nation. The father as head of the fam ily is to take the leader ship in the rearing of the children. (Ephesians 5:23, Ephesians 6:4, Colossians 3:21).
