Jamie Foxx’s hometown celebrates native son

TERRELL, Texas (NNPA) -
Months of mounting rumor,
speculation, anticipation and
finally confirmation exploded
into a euphoric high when Ter
rell, Texas homeboy Eric Bish
op, A/K/A Jamie Foxx, cap
tured the Oscar award tor Best
Actor, making him Holly
woods top mjc leading actor
for the year. Foxx took home
actings most sought-after prize
for his immaculate portrayal of
legendary rhythm and blues
singer Ruy Charles 1n the
movie, Ray. It became the
brightest highlight of Foxx’s
career and fiifc. a gleaming
moment in Black history anfi
an achievement that put his
hometown on the map.

experience as an art teacher
from elementary school to col
lege and an exhibition. Most of
her ime was spent developing
the talent of promising fil%‘h
school students. She has taught
and created works in various
media, including acrylic,
embroidery, oil, pen, ink pot
tery, sculpture, water color and
crafts.
Since retiring from teaching,
she has done numerous one
woman art exhibitions, taught
art classes and demonstrated
her yarn painting techniques at
schools and various civic organ
-Izations.
After introducing her stu
dents to small-scale yarn paint
ing in the 19705, she began to
produce and exhibit large-scale
works with yarn. These paint
ings usually reflect culturally,
and social relevant images of
her life as an African-American
in the rural south.
Orther subjects from her yarn
paintings have included carni
val masks, childrens games,
music and dance, scenes of

the Greater Augusta Arts
Council presents its Annual
Wet Paint Party & Exhibit
to be held on Saturday
March 12, at The Mission
on Broad Street from 6:00-
9 p.m.
Eocal Artists are invited
to show and sell a recent
work. This unique silent
auction will promise the

selling price while any bids
above and beyond will go
towards Arts Council pro
gamming such as Art Scape
amp, a free summer-long
immersion into the arts for
children living in local
housing developments.

Price continued, “but there's

The diversity of the audience at
the arts center indicated that
Foxx's success might be a factor
in bridging whatever gaps have
remained fictwu:n segments of
Terrell.
“When the committee first
started planning, we there

events for the year for the city of
Terrell,” said Price. “It’s pulling
all of the citizens together for a
united cause. The entire city is
very fond of Jamie Foxx.”
And that's evident everywhere.
“This town is really on top of
the world right now,” said
Cynthea Rhodes-Patterson.
“We were going to be proud of
him, regardless. But for him to

Mrs. Annie L. Greene, painter and retired educator is
best known for her yarn paintings.

ber of multimedia yarn paint
ings. She is currently working
on a series of yarn paintings
based on her cflildh(x)d on a
farm in south Georgia that she
anticipates including in a chil
dren’s book.

Rhodes-Patterson and Foxx
supported each other in track
wlt)cn both qualified for the
state. As adults, Foxx went onto
the world of entertainment and
Rhodes-Patterson went on to
make the 1996 U.S. Olympic
team as a triple jumper.
Terrell residents watched the
Oscar program on a big screen
hung above the centers main
stage. The crowd cheered loud
ly when Foxx's name was called
out as one of the Best Actor
nominees, but soon the cheer
ing was replaced by a gripping,
silent nervousness as the pre
senter — 2004 Oscar winner
Charlize Theron - opened the
envelope. Upon the calling of
Foxxs name, they erupted into
a deatening roar after jumping
to their feet.
It's uncertain when Foxx will
return to lerrell and the Dallas
arca. Whenever that may be,
his hometown is ready. Said
Julia Denson-McQueen, a
friend of the Bishop family:
“We've just been hyped up, big
time. We're going to do it r':iht
