Jay-Z
But since his “retirement,”
hes gone on a world tour, per
formed on hit records with
Beyonce and other entertainers,
and had a pmfilc higher than
most working rappers. There
were rumblings that he was
working on a new album. And
in an interview with The Asso
ciated Press this summer, he
said he was thinking about
coming out of retirement.
He told Entertainment
Weekly that he began tinkering
City and taking up acting. The
poet Langston Hughes cast
him in an eardy role in the
Harlem Suitcase Theatre.
Jones appeared as boxing
champion Joe Louis in Spirit of
Youth and other films and
Broadway productions before
his career was interrupted in
the 1950 s when he was black
listed for refusing to testify
before the House Un-Ameri
can Activities Committee.
His movie career resumed by
the late 19505, and he had roles
in the studio over the summer.
“Something, when you love
it, is always tugging at you and
itching, and I was %umng it off
and putting it off. I started
fumbfing around to see if it felt
good,” he said.
The result: Kingdom Come.
The disc is “more in the vein
of The Black Albwum than The
Blueprint, he tells the maga
zne. “I've been experimentn
with things, different types o%
music.
Hes already recruited some
A-list producer-collaborators:
Tlmbafind, Kanye West and
Dr. Dre. Even Coldplay front
man Chris Martin produced a
track called Beach Chair, he
said.
So — for real now — when
does he plan to retire?
“If wake up one day and the
best material fim‘ passed me by
~ and that’s going to happen,”
he said, “then it’s ume to move
on. I've said what I wanted to
say.
in movies including Odds
Against Tomorrow, Wild River,
The Sting and Wimess in a
career that lasted into the
19905. In all, he appeared in
more than 20 films.
He also appeared in several
stage productions with his son.
In addition to his acting,
Jones ran marathons, including
the New York City Marathon
in 1996.
He is survived by his son,
another son, Matthew Earl
Jones, and a grandson.
Funeral services were private.
