Civil Rights leaders fear chilling affect of high court decision

rights leaders had predicted it.
Yet, they are dismayed at the U.
S. Supreme Court’s 54 dedi
().fSPn to limit the voluntary use
race in public school desegre
gation, undermining the spirit
of Brown v. Board of Educa
tion.
“What the court did today is
unfortunate. This is not a good
day for our country,” says Ted
Shaw, director-counsel of the
NAACP lfichfmsc and
Education outside the
court last Thursday. “The
court....walks away from both
the spirit and the substance of
Brown and in one fell swoop is
overturning years of prece
dent.”

CNN reporter’s firing followed e-mailed love notes

subsequently published
many of the messages on
her blog.
The woman, Marianne
Briner, wrote last week on
the blog}.. “Distant ‘Lovers.”
Meanwhile, Briner’s own
motivations have been
questioned by Kenyan jour
nalists who noted that
Briner, a Swiss national who
did business in Kenya, had
testified in 2005 tK:( she
had a secret relationship
with Daniel arap Moi, pres
ident of Kenya from 1978
to 2002, a claim Moi
strongly denied.

The plurality’s position, | fear,

And in turn, Lambert, a
Democrat, lost his state
Senate seat in last week’s
Democratic primary. He
suffered a backlash from
voters angered by his
endorsement of the conser
vative, pro-Confederate
Mr. Allen.
“I don’t see (the GOP)
doing anything for my peo
ple,” Green said. “And
Lambert put his neck on
the line gr George Allen,
but where was he?”
He described Mr. Allen as
“cowardly.”
When contacted on Tues
day by the Free Press, Lam
bert confirmed that he has
received no contributions
from Mr. Allen.
Nor has he received any
money from the Good
Government Action Fund,
a state political action com
mittee Mr. Allen set up
May 31 to help elect candi
dates to the General Assem
bly.
Lambert said that Allen
asked before the election
what he could do to help.
“I told him I really needed
him to get people to come
out to vote,” he said. “I was
shocked that I didn't get the

He called her “a dangerous

The opinion of the Court, ren
dered by stark conservative

have — and that was from
Democrats, independents
and Republicans alike,”
Lambert said.
“I ran an open campaign
for everyone. I didn't criti
cize anybody,” he contin
ued. “I did that because,
although it was a Democra
tic primary, it was open to
all people. So I ran a cam
paign for all people.”
Asked whether he expected
Allen to reciprocate and
publitly endorse him and
campaign for him, Lambert
said, “It was up to Allen to
do what he wanted to do.”
Asked whether he expected
financial support from
Allen, Lambert said, “I put
more than SIOO,OOO of my
own money into my cam
paign (in loans). If anybody
wants to send me a check
now, I'll take it.”
Allen was not immediate
ly available for comment.
The Richmond area’s most
vocal and visible black
Republican, Green has
been active in GOP circles
for more than 10 years. He
regularly attends Henrico
County Republican Com
mittee meetings and its

Muhammad Ali's former
training camp, opened in
1972 as he tried to rebound
from a loss to Joe Frazier in
the “Fight of the Century, is
headed for auction.
The 18-building complex
in rural Schuy|ki£l;| County
is set to go up for sale Mon
day on eßay and will be up
for bid for 30 days, accord
ing to George Dillman, a
former Ali sparring partner
who bought the camp from
him ten years ago.
After building the log
cabin-style gym in 1972,
Ali then built cabins for his
wife, parents and sparring
pateners, as well as a
mosque for daily worship.
He trained there until his
last fight against Trevor
Berbick in 1981.
In the 19705, Ali also
trained there for the leg
endary “Rumble in the Jun
gle” with George Foreman
and the “Thrilla in Manilla”
rematch with Frazier.
The complex drew
numerous celebrities during
that time, including sports
analyst Howard Cosell,
Michael Jackson, Andy
Warhol and Elvis Presley.

Dillman, 65, said he
bought the camp from Ali
for SIOO,OOO in 1997 and
has since put $500,000 into
renovations.
After buying it from Ali,
Dillman and his wife
turned the complex into a
boxing-themed bed and
breakfast geared toward
anglers, kayakers, skiers,
hunters and others drawn
to the rural part of eastern
Pennsylvania.
The decision to sell the
camp was linked to a
divorce settlement, said
Dillman, who says he has
only fond memories of his
time there.
“I was there when it was
built, when every log was
put in place,” he recalled. “I
used to sit around the fire
place and chat with Alj,
Frank Sinatra and Sammy
Davis Jr.”
