endure, and the aftermath can end up
destroying entire families. In her new
mystery novel, Daddy’s Litde Girl, Mary
Higgins Clark portrays the destructive
effects of a 15-year-old’s murder on her
parents and her younger sister as they
cach wreste privately with the guilt of
not having been able to prevent it. At the
heart of Daddy’s Litde Girl is the story of
a family torn apart by an awful crime.
Attempting to cope with her own feel
ings of responsibility in her sister’s death,
Ellic reflects on the breakdown of her
parent’s marriage, her mother’s eventual
alcoholism, and her own separation from
her father. As any of us might do, Ellie
ponders the “if only’s” of that night —
if only shed told her parents about
Andrea’s secret meeting, if only her father
had come home earlier that night, if only
her mother hadn't been so blinded by
wealth. For the past 22 years, Ellie has
felt torn between her guilt about what
she could have prevented, and her rage
that her father seemed to care so little for
his remaining daughter.
Mary Higgins Clark reminds the read
er that behind every tragedy there are
human beings just trying to cope with
events.

It's morning time. The alarm clock has already gone off and]
we ‘ve worn out the snooze button. It's time to get up, turn o,
the alarm clock, and start a new day. Weeping time is over.
I don't know about you, but I'm tired of weeping. I'
tired of weeping over the murder of black boys. I'm tired o
weeping over the abuse of young children. I'm tired of weepin,
over the sexual exploitation of women. I'm tired of weepin,
about the economic exploitation of a powerless people.... I'm
tired of weeping over racial arrogance and racial ignorance.
Wake up, people. It's morning time. It may seem that
haven't gained much ground since we lost Dr. King, but we'
made it this far by keeping our faith, by leaning on the Lord.
