Boone : ‘Sowing seeds to change lives’
Continued from page 10
Every experience, whether pain or
pleasure, success or failure, good or
evil, accords me the power of multi
dimensional vision; thus, a broader
spectrum of life to empower, enter
tain, and enlighten.
My own family enjoys multifac
eted creativity. Much of my inspira
tion comes from collaborating with
them on various projects and from
the stories of our connected histo
ries. The front cover of my current
project was designed by my sister,
Nancy Wellington Bookhart and
the back cover was inspired by my
sister, Sharon Wellington Boone,
who co authored From Colored
Waters “Til Now.
Augusta Focus — When did you
write your first book and what were
you?
DWB- I was quite young when
my fascination with reading and
writing began. Because we could
n't afford notebook paper, I began
writing poetry on brown grocery
bags. | was amazed that with words,
I could express every inner emo
tion and experience . My very first
complete poem was entitled A
Lover’s Faith. I was eleven.
Augusta Focus — What genre are
you most comfortable with?
DWB- I read widely to experi
ment with different genres.
However, Because 1 believe that gifts
are given to fulfill purpose, and to
keep myself out of the box, I
would say I-am a Literary Prophet.
Simply because I draw heavily from
the prophetic world of dreams and
visions for inspiration.
Most of the time I am engaged in
cross reading. Right now, I have
bookmarks in several different
books: my favorite book, the Bible,
Virginia Woolf, The Secrets of a
Millionaire Mind, World of Dreams,
Revolutionary Tales by African
American Women, and always a
book of poetry nearby, Gwendolyn
Brooks, Maya Angelou, Langston
Hughes, and poetry almanacs of
every style possible including artists
from Def Poetry Jam.
Augusta Focus ~ Do you have a spe
cific style?
DWB- Rambling. Yeah, that
would be it. I love mixing. Giving
readers a guided tour of different
styles as long as the message, or plot
is not compromised in the process.
I love to color the landscape with
controversies and contemplations
that challenge the reader to move
beyond mediocrity.
Augusta Focus — What inspired the
writing of your current project, Said
I Wasn't Gonna Tell Nobody, but...?
DWB- I would like to say that I
was inspired. Truth be told, I was
divinely commissioned to tell the
truth in a matter that we church folk
have been skipping around for years;
telling stories, but not the truth;
knowing that the sexual abuse of
children echo throughout Protestant
churches just as loudly as in the
Catholic church; knowing, but keep
ing the silence about homosexuals
who ruin lives behind the deception
of manhood, marriage, and ministry;
preaching, but falling short of heal
ing the pain of those who suffer at
the hands of predators in the pulpit
and pews across this nation and
around the world.
Augusta Focus — How much of your
writing is realistic? ;
DWB- The landscape for this
story is my own life. Every vignette
mirrors a real life story that confirms
the reality of the truth I seek to con
vey. Convinced that we (those
affected) must tell our own truth in
our own voice, or remain victims, |
became transparent so that I could
become a voice of hope and healing
for those affected by the cult of
silence.
This is my motivation for the story
I tell in Said I Wasn't Tell Nobody,
But... If this truth snatches one child
out of the path of sexual predators,
transforms one victim to victor, or
moves one passive person to proac
tive purpose, it would have served
the purpose for which God entrusted
to me the gift of writing.
