Prince of Wales’ Socialistic Ideas
Keep Him Unmarried, Says Novelist
Philadelphia, Dec. 19.—In a
half facetious, half serious speech
before the Philadelphia branch of
the English Speaking union, Cos
mo Hamilton, noted British author
and playwright, declared the rea
son the Prince of Wales refuses
to marry is that he believes he
will never be king of England.
The prince, he explained, has
been exposed to doctrines of 80 -
cialism so much that he has had
the germ injected somewhat In hif
own veins.
<( The Prince of Wales is a great
chaf, a charming fellow and very
human,” Mr. Hamilton said. “He
loses his head from time to time,
but that doesn’t matter.

Pittsburg, Dec. 19.—Appealing
to the federal court after he had
been sentenced to death, Joseph
Valotta has won his freedom.
Judge W. H. S. Thomson, upheld
Valotta’s contention that his con
stitutional rights we 2 -e, violated
when he was tried on two charges,
first and second degree murder.
The jury had returned a double
verdict.
CUBAN CONGRESSMAN
AND EDITOR FIGHT DUEL
Havana, Dec. 19.-r-Gustavo Gon
zales, liberal member of congress
and part owner of Heraido de
Cuba, was slightly wounded in the
chest by a bullet yesterday in a
duel with Desidero Ferrera, sub
editor of El Heraido. After Gon
zales was wounded, the combat
ants became reconciled.
HIDE BOOTLEG FREIGHT
IN PULLMAN CAR WALLS
New Orleans, Dec. 19.—With
the arrest of two St. Louis men
yesterday officers said they have
uncovered a liquor ring which
used a new method of transporta
tion.
The bootleggers unscrewed the
panels from Pullman cars on sid
ings, put liquor in the^ space be
tween the inner and outer side
of these, screwed them up again
and their wired confederates in
code the name of the Pullman and
the train it would leave on, ac
cording to the police.

ARE ARRESTED FOR
MAKING MOONSHINE

Bristol, Va., Dec. 19—Word has
reached here of the arrest of two
preachers, the Rev. Floyd Can
trell and the Rev. Medford Lane
wh* have been conducting revivals
in the mountains, on charges of
making moonshine whiskey.
The two were at a still in the
woods when taken into custody by
prohibition officers. They compain
ed that they would be unable to
conduct services that night if tak
en to jail. Lane had a large Bible
in his possesion when arrested.

mier Ramsay MacDonald plans to
sturt next Monday on the sea
voyage recommended for his
^health. It was recently stated
that he might visit ’the United
States, but his actual itinerary

ARRESTED FOR ROBBING
BANK 14 YEARS AGO
Detroit, Dec. 19.—Clifford S.
Heller, said to be known .also as
L. W. Smith, was arrested here
by Federal officers on a charge of
robbing the Moupt Holly National
Bank, of Mount; Holly, M. J., of
$18,510. The theft, according to
the federal agwits, occurred in
June, 1910, when Heller was cash
ier. o

Charlottesville, Va., Dec. 19.—
Dr. John himself p. Dickinson, 65 years
old, shot early yesterday
afternoon. As a means of steady
ing his hand when he pulled the
trigger of the pistol, the authori
ties say, Dr. Dickinson had bound
a lead pencil to the barrel in a
manner that caused ‘the eraser
to extend beyond the barrel in or
der to direct definitely the course
of the bullet.
