The only derbies worn are by

The traditions of the old romp
days of the west still hang
the city.

The nearest approach to a stiff

But these are comparatively few.
In tact, summer is called the
coolest part of the year in San

not be literally true, yet chill
trade winds contrive to make it
so. The average summer

FOR ALL-WEATHER DRIVING
. -
The Touring Car is now bought for
winter use as commonly as the closed ■
types are bought for summer use.
This is largely due to notable improve
ments that have been achieved in the
cut and design of the curtains. They
fit closely, open and close with the doors,
and make it possible to keep the interiors
snug and warm in cold weather.
/
We also carry special curtains with
glass windows which practically convert.
the car into the closed type.

Vessel’s Weight Varies 1
According to Direction
Attention was called recently In a
scientific magazine to the differ
ence In tbe weight and the dis
placement ef_d . ship steaming east
and one steaming weal un account
of the. centrifugal force acting upon
It. A specific example was cited
of an American 1,10< i-um destroyer
traveling westward «t 25 knots and
adding 282.8 pounds to her weight,
while the same craft speeding east
ward would subtract 480.62 pounds
from her weight.
The Engineer, London, has taken
pains to look Into the'matter and
gives us some additional facts. In
asmuch us a vessel running at 25
knots had a speed of 42 feet a sec
ond, and as the peripheral speed
of the earth at the equator Is 1,580
feet a second, It Is clear that In
steaming westward, with the two
speeds opposing each other, the
true linear velocity of the ship
would he 1,518 feet a second, While
on an eastward course it would
be 1,002 feet. The centrifugal force
exerted on a vessel of the aforesaid
size and speed Is 8,410 pounds on a
westward course journey—indicating and 9,306 pounds
on an eastward
a difference of 956 pounds between
the two conditions.—Compressed
Air Magazine.
