THE MAN WHO
UNDERSTANDS.
(By George Matthew Odams.)
n his play, "Abraham Lincoln, Drink
water has one of his Chroniclers say:- Lonely
is the man who understands."
Vision and loneliness go hand in hand.
Nearly a century ago it was almost the lone
voice o f Wendell Phillips that cried out for
the equality of pay and opportunity for \vo
men with that of men.
The other day 1 voted and there were
many women as men present to exercise theii
privilege. And recently, when performing the
service of a federal grand juryman, a younn
woman appeared before us as an assistant
district attorney and presented her cases along
side those of her men associates.
But somebody long ago had to start plead
mg for this sex equality that has so generally
come about and so, into our national and
world life; has gushed a new stream of
strength.
The passion for unfair gain passes with the
clearer understanding of cooperation.
Men and governments are not made, nor do
they spring full grown, like Hebe from some
shell of nature, Progress is a process of
growth. The {baby has no character. Growth
is what makes’ men. nations, enduring works
of art—and pansies.
And so the rtthn who understands walks
Si ilently along his lonely way. But if you could
look in that embryo and know how to
translate the travail of that hidden sould. you
would see empires being formed inside. Cities,
movements for the greater greatness of man
kind, ideas in the rough, and choice pay-ore,
awaiting eyes and hands more ready than
those idly smiling at him as he goes his way
through the days of misunderstanding and
doubt.
1 am very sure that we were not put into
this world to walk up to our many preferences
that we might order them carefully wrapped
for delivery at our front doorsteps.
No adequate reward of character is ever
delivered on time.
God alone appoints His prophets.

PANCAKES.
When ya rise up in tbe morning and an

a thrill that overcomes ya, and ya dress anc.

It’s a temptin' mess of batter that is turn

with the butter and the sirup’s flowin’ free,
and you seem to think ya never knew such

As the cakes are disappearin', pretty soon
ya hesitate. Then ya jump up from the table
and for other folks ya bake. It’s kinda fun to
flop 'em and to flip 'em inthe air as ya twist
the pancake turner on the cakes a-cookin’
there.
Yea, the chilly, frosty mornings bring the
pancakes into play, an’ it makes us kinda glad
the weather’s switched around that way. Ya
can talk about yer omelets and ye ham. and
eggs and such, but, compered to fluffy flnp
jacks— -well, they don't amount to much.
