CJUFFIN DAILY NEWS
Saint and Sinner
Faith did not attempt to explain
clearly to herself why she pretended
to be asleep that night when Bob
returned from the opera, to which,
at her request and Nils Jonson’s, he
had escorted Rhoda. Perhaps an
obscure vanity over the fact that
Nils had chosen her in whom to con
fide his feelings toward Cherry and
and his queer campaign to win
her made her hug the secret to her
breast; perhaps also there was the
ever-lurking suspicion of Bob's real
feelings toward Cherry.
If Bob still loved her, he would
certainly disparage Nils Jonson as
a suitor, and Faith believed impli
citly that Bob could influence Cherry
to reject him when he again asked
her to marry him. And now, more
than anything in the world, Faith
wanted Cherry to marry Nils Jon
son.
Aside from the fact it would leave
her free with Bob, to work out their
own problems unhampered by fam
ily, she was sure that Nils was an
ideal husband for her wilful, impes
tuous, high strung, adorable little
sister. But it would not be fair to
Nils to give him away to anyone—
not even to Bob. And so she lay
very still, with her head tucked un- ]
dey her upflung arm, while Bob j
tiptoed heavily about the bed room
yawning gustily now and then.
Poor darling, she grinned to her
self, he’d probably pinched himself
to keep awake during the intermin
able four hours of the opera. And j
how bored he must have been with [
Rhoda’s conscientious, respectful j
chatter! But had he been bored?
How little she really knew of this
man who was her husband! Maybe
Rhoda’s obvious awe of him and her
jchildish admiration were very sooth
ing to his vanity. Maybe he had en
joyed the evening hugely, far more
than if she. his wife, had been along!
At breakfastl on Friday Rhoda
chattered eagerly of the opera, un
til Cherry appeared In the dining
room, looking astonishingly pretty
in a two-piece velveteen dress of
gclden brown. In the short, straight
little suit, with its wide collar of
ecru lace, she looked more like the
old pictures of Little Lord Falintel
roy than like a woman who had
gone through marriage, a murder
trial, motherhood and divorce. Rho
da’s blue eyes flew wide with invol-
untary admiration, then the girl
flushed and turned her face away.
Cherry stood looking down at Nils'
sister for a long moment, a queer
smile twitching at the comers of her
geranium tinted lips. Then sihe>
laughed and pulled out her chair.
You certainly have an awful hate
on me, haven’t you, Rhoda? ■
“Cherry please!” Faith begged
“Oh, I just wanted to reassure the
poor child,” Cherry retorted flip
pantly. “She’s scared to death I'm
going to many that precious broth
er of hers and I want to set her
mind at ease.’’
“It’s not that!” Rhoda blurted out
miserably, her face scarlet. “I'm
scared to death you woh’t marry
him! I want Nils to be happy. *»
“Thank you, Rhoda,” Cherry's
voice was suddenly sweet and tender
as she laid a hand over the other
girl's, “but fortunately Nils has al
ready found out that the way to be
happy is to be free. A remarkable
young man—he changes his mind as
quickly as he makes it up.

LUGGAGE RACK
A camp chair painted a gay shade
cretonne top, should be hung
ir. the guest room closet to be used
as a rack for suit cases.
CIRCULAR HEMS
On circular skirt use narrow silk
ribbon to finish back the hem, in
stead of turning it under. Also catch
by hand only at intervals. Never
stitch it.
-
LUNCHEON DISH
Hard-boiled eggs, served hot on
grilled sausages and covered with
cheese sauce, make a luncheon dish
with a tang. Garnish with parsley.
NUT SAUCE
Macaroni is delicious if served with
tomato sauce to which a generous
amount of chopped nuts has been
added.
MIXED SALAD
Nothing is more refreshing than
a salad which mixes with greens—
say Romaine, watercress and endive
with chopped parsely irt the French
dressing.
