LIFE’S BEST.
c___ ——rv
“Every fellow for himself and the devil
take the hindmost" is a philosophy to which
I have never been able to subscribe. When
a ship goes down in a storm with only*
t all right
hardy sailors on board, it may be
for the captain to say, "Every fellow for
himeelf,” but he never says this so long as
there is possibility of one man helping an
other.
Albert Edward Wiggam, in a lecture be
fore the Atlanta Writers Club, a few years
ago, suggested the queer and heartless doc
trine that charity is a mistake and that help
ing others is a blunder, We all agree that
misdirected charity is a mistake and that it
is a blunder to help others without encour
aging them to help themselves, but we can
not and will not subscribe to any theory of
absolute selfishness.
What would life be—to you and me—if
it weren't for pleasant words, encouraging
smiles, and helping hands? Has life any
thing better—aside from faith in humanity
and hope of immortality? '
Which would you prefer, to live in a man
sion whose walls reverberated only loud, harsh
words—a mansion of frowns and hindering
hands, or a cottage where love could be
heard in every spoken word, .where unselfish
ness could be seen in every face, and where
every hand helped and never hindered?
This is not saying, of course, that cottage
words are always pleasant and that mansion
words are always harsh, The fact is that
grinding poverty and growls sometime go
together, and that material comforts are some
times conductive of gentleness.
If those of us who have lived even so
short a space as thirty or forty years will look
back and think it all over, I believe we will
find that pleasant words, encouraging smiles
and helping hands have meant more to us—
and mean more to us today—than all our
hopes, many of which are crumbled; than all
our money (if we ever had any), much -of
which we have lost; than such fleeting fame
or honors as we may have attained; than
even health itself.
And let us never forget that there are two
sides of this idea of life's best gifts to man.
Tljie pleasant words help both the speaker
and the bearer. The encouraging smile im
proves at least two faces, And the helping
hands—Dear Lord, what would life be with
out theml

Perhaps parents are thinking that

Complex^ as we have learned to

they are facts. Inhibitions, or im

effect may remain to blight a life,
Often the cause is not even known,
But there has been discovered a way
of tracing these causes, and thus
curing complexes that have reached
ah alarming stage. This system is
known as “recall.”
For Instance a famous lecturer had
a complex that kept him In con
stant terror of something behind
him. This fear followed him even
to the lecture platform, where he
was absolutely unable to speak until
a screen had been placed close be
hind him.
H could not eat unless he sat with
his back to the wall. He was alert
and fearful when walking, and had
a pecuv.r.r -norror of the dark.
Complex Can Be Cured Sometimes.
He was perfectly sane and perfect
ly normal but his life was miser
able.
Pathologists, oy tne system or sug
gestion mentioned, traced it to a
simple incident in childhood, when
the boy wandered into the deserted
twilight ol the buck part ot a store
where boxes were stored. Me
thought he was alone. Suddenly out
ot the darkness jiftnped the store
keeper, who clapped his hands over
his little friend's eyes and held him
securely for a considerable time
without saying* a word,
it was only a Joke but think of the
consequences!
If yog are Interested in this spe
cific case—by recalling the cause of
his fear, the man was cured. Just
so strange are the workings of our
brains.
So it is necessary for parents to
realize that the practical joke has
no place in a little child’s life, even
though it appear innocent enough at
the time.
