follows, In part:
“With the cessation of activities
In June and during the following
quiescent period, the plans of* the
chapter officers for the coming year’s
work spring Into being. Of prime
importance is the assembling of the
program for the fall and winter sea
son. In many chapters the program
is the magnet that draws its mem
bers to the monthly meetings and at
the close those in attendance
promptly register an opinion as to
whether or not the time has been
satisfactorily spent.
“'jfoe day has passed when the
precious hours of every afternoon or
evening needs to be devoted to par
ties or to papers that are not al
together pertinent to the subjects
of our socltey. Not that the social
side must be overlooked. On the
contrary, it serves a most useful
purpose, that of bringing the mem
bers together in Inflmiate, friendly
converse and in developing mutual
interest. But the world Is moving
fast and for most el us there is
much to do and very little time left
for desired accomplishments.
“The chairman of the program
in each chapter should obtain from
her regent or headquarters a copy
of the resolutions adopted at the
37th continental congress and then
see to it that those bearing upon
vital subjects are presented for
thoughtful and intelligent discus
sion by the members. The construc
tive side of our national work must
not be overlooked and the subject
matter is so Inexhaustible that there
Is scant danger of the individual
or the chapter being surfeited with
Information.
“The various national committee
chairmen often have interesting
angles of their work to present and
the chapter program is an excellent
medium whereby the newer mem
bers may become familiar with the
many activities of the society. Short
addresses and short programs are
the surest guarantee ol sustained in
terest and attention.
"In closing, I wish to express the
earnest hope that by sincere endea
vor and a relizatlon of our respon
sibility as a patriotic society, the
year we are now facing will be
marked by accomplishments worthy
of the heritage, with which we are
sa richly blessed. The road lies be
fore us straight and clear. May we
not be deflected from Its course, but
through sunshine and shadow fol
low it in faith, serene and un
i ! afraid."**

Marye and Mom
DEAR MOM:
A? a mannequin, I wouldn't be
worth very much today—I have the
most dazzling coat of sunburn you
ever saw. I positively radiate crim
eon rays.
Yesterday was one of those in
nocuous appearing days, when there
was not much sun, so Helen and i
spent nearly all day on the beach.i
enjoying the salt breezes, and feel
ing rather kindly disposed toward
the world generally.
In the evening I began to feel a
bit uncomfortable, and by midnight
I realized that I must have burned
off at least four layers of my outer
epidermis.
Today, I burst out in this flame
colored splendor, and I must say 1
am a bit hard to look at. I’ll have
one of the those gorgeous sunkissed
tans in a day or two, and I really
fancy myself with a brown finish,
but today,I am no delight to the
eye or to myself.
J Brother Shelton gave one look at
me and fled. He said he could not
bear me that way, that I had wreck
ed all his Illusions—he really is a
terrible sentimentalist. I pointed out
that I had wrecked my own com
fort for a while, but that meant
nothing to him. He really believes
a woman has no right to be com
fortable unless she can be decora
tive in so doing.
Helen, who has been out here for
several weeks, and who has no ten
dency to bum or tan anyhow, ot
course has the advantage over me
now, for I must say she looks more
like a man's Ideal of womanhood
than I do. But I know my type,
and in a few days, all will be well.
Helen may be heartbroken, and
suffering for her late lamented lov
er, but I must say that she manages
to find consolation now and then,
and her sweet, confiding ways with
my husband may get on my nerves,
In time.
You see. being married to a hard
boiled woman such* as I am, who
bursts into strong language rather
than tears at times of stress and
strain, and who does her weeping In
solitary confinement, Alan falls
pretty hard for his heartbreak rac
ket. And how he loves to give ad
vice, and be the big. strong man to
this delicate little clinging vine. And
how I do see through every move!
And yet I must say, that I like a
good performance, even at my own
expense.
If Helen starts to vamp my hus
band. I mean, if she continues to,
I may have a problem on my hands
that I didn’t create. I trust she
doesn’t make It necessary for me to
step in and protect itiy own—for I
really like her. and I don’t want to
be any more severe with her than
I have- to.
