Evangelistic singer who is returning
to Griffin for tiie revival meeting at

he was in Griffin last year who are
delighted to have him back again ,
He will arrive in time for the Sun- ]
day services. !
Jesus more clearly in its .implica
tions for daily life and its rela
tions to human customs than the
I ieferences to the,Sabbath that are
j found in his teachings in the
, stories concerning him.
j should never be forgotten that
! ■: .
i 1 Jesus was of Jewish race and re
hgion. . He brought
was up in ;he
reverent atmosphere that sur
round a child in a devout Jewish
home of that age, and again and
agam he indicates in his teaching
th. e_ autj j onty_,_aL.. t h e sain t l y and
prophetic teachings of Israel.
No man who reads the Old Tes
tament today with reverence and
common sense can fail to re-pond
to the heights of its moral- ideai
ism, particularly if he be a dis
criminating reader and does not
feel that he has to apologize for
atrocious things that men did in
the name of God, but against the
very spirit of the God whom Jesus
revealed.
We may recall, for instance, when
Jesus was asked to call down fire
from heaven and consume the vil
lagers who had treated him inhos
pitably, and the disciples had re
minded hiriTTfiat Elijah hud done
a similar thing. Jesus replied: "Ye
know not what spirit ye are ot."
Form and Spirit
But Jesus drew a very clear
tinction between the rcl.gton of
form and the religion of the spirit. 1
and between a religion ol an ig-1
ncrant and backward age and thet
r'ehgion of an enlightened age. He]
never made the mistake that many l
of his followers have made of set
ting form above the spirit or ol!
establishing any rule of precept
above the rule ol the spirit ol God .
in . the ... life o , man. '
It happened that it iviis around
the instltu ion 0 the Sabbath that
much of this Clear distinction n
the „ . teaching .. . ot ... Jesus developed. ,
The Sabbath, instead of being a
boon and blessing to main, had be
come in the thought oi ecclcsmstl
cal bigots something of a tyranny.
It had been hedged about with
forms and purely formal observan
ces that, instead of making it a
day of rest and gladness, made it
something of a burden.
The age of Jesus is not . the
only age in which that has hap
pened. There are those in the
modern world who have forgotten
... that, the .. Sabbath „ .. .. was made . ,
man and not man for the Sabbath,!
