WEEKLY SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON
STEWARDSHIP OF SERVICE
T|» International Uniform inn
day School Lesson for June t.
Stewardship of Service. Matt. 25:
14-20.
* * *
Editor of The (ongrcgationalist
The general lesson title for this
lesson. "A Contrast Between
Faithfulness and Slothfulness," is
somewhat more descriptive
though neither title quite brings
out the full significance of the
letson which has really to do with
the real sense of value and its
application to life.
The lesson is on of those strik
ing manifestations of common
sense in which Jesus attacks the
greatest problems of life and con
duct from the standpoint of life’s
Amplest principles. There is. also,
in the lesson the emphasis upon
the fact so commonly emphasized
in the teaching of Jesus that the
laws of ghe spiritual world are
not sc unlike the laws of llic phy
sical and material world.
I’aUs far Action.
Tlie ideal life in the conception
of Jesus is not a life of mere good
iptent ons, of futile dreaming, no
matter how rich and fine the
dreams may be the ideal life is
found, rather, in a true and real
investment of all that one is and
cf all that one has. It is the di
rection of life that determines its
destiny, or. as we should put
in a terse phrase of teday, it is
character that counts. If a man
has a great treasure and allows
that, treasure to lie neglected,
neither in the material world nor
in the spiritual world can the
sure be of much use to him
self or to anybody else,
There is no glory that attaches
to the timidlity cf doing nothing,
even on the assumption that if
one does nothing lie can do no
wrong. Life in its highest aspect
is a matter of adventure and com
mitment.- If we are not willing
to assume risks, there can be no
glory, of result.
At!’this is expressed in the form,
of a parable, which concerns a
man cf substance going into an
other .country entrusting his good:;
to his servants to make the best
use of them possible. According
to their several abilities he pro
portioned-the responsibility, giving
to cne five talents, to another two,
and to another one. 'The story as
It precedes m an interesting re
flection of life.
The man with the five talents
doubled his capital, ••<> also the
man of two talent::; but the man
of one talent, careful lest he
might lose it. hid ii away for safe
keeping. On the return of the
master, the servants who had re
ceived respectively five talents and
two talents gained the approval
of their lord. But the man who
had hidden away the one talent
j was rebuked as wicked and sloth
I ful because in his anxiety he had
j I not taken proper should care produce even its

Of course the parable is not en
tirely typical of life. Like much
of the teaching of Jesus it is di
rected toward the driving home
of one particular truth and the
rebuking of the narrowness and
weakness of one phase of fife. In
actual life it is sometimes the
five-talent man who fails, wad
the one-talent man who succeeds
beyond all measure, and who as
sumes the place that naturally
and rightfully might have belong
ed to the man of large opportun
lty
But no man either of five! tal
ents or of one talent ever suc
ceeds either In the material world
or In the spiritual world by the
methods pursued by the cne-tal
ent man. There can be no grear
living without serious and defi
nite commitment, Conservation
