WHY IS .MILK PASTEURIZED?
BECAUSE, after years of intensive scientific re
search. leading authorities recommend pasteurization as
the most practical safeguard of the nation's milk supply
against the spread of certain diseases. Most large cities
require pasteurization by law.

Text: Judges 4:1-10, Lord
And the children of Israel again did evil In the sight of the
and when £huri was dead. I
And the Lord sold them Into the hand of Jabln king of Canaan that
reigned In Hazor: the captain of whose host was Sisera which dwelt
In Harosheth of the Gentiles.
And the children of Israel cried unto the Lord: for he had nine
hundred chariot- of Iron; and twenty years he mightily oppressed the
children of Israel. "
And Deborah. a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, she Judged Israel
at that time.
And she dwelt under the palm tree of Deborah, between Ramah and
Bethel In Mount Ephraim: and the children of Israel came up to her
for Judgment.
And she sent and called Barak the son of Ablnoam out of Kedesh.
naphtili, and said unto him, Hath not the Lord Ood of Israel com
manded. saying, Go and draw toward Mount Tabor, and take with
thee ten thousand men of the children of Naphtall and of the chll
dren of Zebulun?
And I will draw unto thee, to the river cf Klshon, Sisera the captain
of Jibln’s army, with his chariots and his multitude; and I will deliver
him into thine hand.
And Horak said unto her. If thou wilt go with me, then I will go;
but If thou wilt not go with me then I will not go.
And she said. I will surely go with thee; notwithstanding the Jour
ney that thou takest, shall ndt be for thine honor; for the Lord shall

with Bank to Kedesh.
And Barak called Zebulun and Naphtali to Kedesh; and he went up
with ten thousand men at his feet; and Deborah went up with him.

We arc apt in think of
active participation In public af

ing to Its climax only during the
last, few years. Perhaps, however

history than the way in which, de
spite the grhferal relegation of wo
mon to a place interior to man 1 ; wo
men have, non" the less, achieved
conspicuous leadership and rent'.-r
cri profound service.
Here in a crisis in the affairs ot
Israel, in a time of unsettlement,
when Israel was surely in need of
leadershlp, it is interesting to
the chief leadership entrusted to a
woman. Dpborah. we note,
also a married woman. Whatever
her personal or home obligations
may have been, they had become
enlarged by 'the strength and rich
ness of her character, for she was
not only a leader in the civil life-
a judge of Israel, but she was a
prophetess. It was her prophetic
vision and messages that had no
doubt given her her pre-eminence
in the nation.
The Source of Her Power
It is rather a stately picture that
we have of her dwelling under the
palm tree that had become associ
ated with her name— t ratable tree
in the hill country ot Ephra'm.
whither the children of Tsriiel came
to her for Judgment,
The influence of good women
never been greater tlian when it
has been exercised upon men.

Deborah’s power seemed to 11c lar\o
in her capacity to inspire and
guide others. She called Barak
and gave him a military commissiofi
to go to Mount Tabor and take
with him ten thousand men to fight
Sisera, a captain of Jabln’s army,
who had nine hundred chariots of
1 ' 0 "' a " d . who . for , twenty . , years , had ,
mightily oppressed the children of
Israel.
Barak was not altogether ready
for his task. He evidently feared
the greatness of the power which
Deborah was urging him to fight;
but he had profound faith In De
borah so much so that he declined
to 8° without her; but he agreed
to go if Deborah would accompany
him. Deborah did not depend
merely upon womanly influence,
she was a woman of decisive
tion. She announced her readi
go with Barak, though
rebuked his lack of manfulness
of reminding him that he
have no honor out of the encounter,
as Sisera would fall through
hand of a woman.
The upshot of the whole matter
need not be fully dwelt upon.
borah’s prediction fell true, and
sera succumbed to assassination at'
the hand of Jael whose vigor
determination rather than her
manliness seemed manifest in the
driving of a nail into Sisera’s skull.
It must be remembered that the
whole period was one of unsettle
inent when the life of Israel was
in some measure disorganized, and
there was a lack of that patient re
ligious enthusiasm characteristic of
the people In their highest expert
ences. It is against this back
ground of a people lacking faith
and courage and weak under op
pression that Deborah’s own faith
and power of action stand out.
It was probably not the ftrst time
in history that woman’* consecra
tion to a great task had Inspired
new hope and action in those round
about her, nor was it to be the last.
One thinks of Deborah as a sort of
matronly Joan of Arc, fired with zeal
and spirit, oonoclouE of a voise
leading her forward and giving her
strength. As Moses stands as the
great type of liberator and law
giver, so Deborah has captured the
human imagination as the striking
figure of womanly leadership and
Judgment.
Many Womanly Virtues
It Is a noteworthy point that her
womanliness seems to stand out
rather strongly in the narrative. We
are not told a great deal concern
ing her, and we can fill in the pic
ture only largely through our ima
gination, but there Is nothing in
the portrayal that suggests any
thing but womanly virtues deeply
consecrated to the scrvtSe of her
people. hundred
It Is now over a years
since Mary Wollstonecraft wrote a
book in vindication of the rights of
woman, around the doctrine that
there Is no sex in souls. Whatever
the truth about that there is
tainly little evidence of sexual dis
crimination guidanc&hf in God’s providential
use and his creatures. A
consecrated womarM s as capable of
used for high ends and pur
poses as is a consecrated man. Hap
py the age that finds a Deborah
when a Mose s is lacking!
