BRITISH WRITERS
PROCLAIM STRIB
AS WORLD CHAMP
London sporting writers who
saw Young Stribling knock out
Phil Scott, English champion, in
the second round of their fight
last night were - loud in their
praise of the Georgia boy. The
London papers proclaimed him
world champion and predicted
" that Stribling would win easily
from Sehmelllng, the German
fluke champion, "if thev ever
met,"
Gerald Walter, English box
ing expert wrote the following
ringside account of the fight:
"Forty thousand Englishmen roar
ed a welcome to Phil Scott as he
stepped into the arena here
to meet Young Stribling, from the
United States, in a 10-round heavy
weight battle, but that spectacular
welcoming cheer turned into a dres
cendo of hoots and hisses as Scott
was ushered out of the ring a few
minutes later after being counted
out in the second round, the victim
of a slashing left to the ribs.
‘Scott has never appeared in such
a hard light before the English peo
pie, who hitherto have thought he
was unfairly treated at Miami.
Stribling has always been popular

Scott Dioked Foolish
"The American gave a great
hibition. making Scott look foolish
all the way The English
plon’s performance was a great dis
appointment, and Stribling. by
easy victory, made most of the
crowd believe Sharkey won the Mi
ami fight whether there was a foul
or not. This feeling found expres
sion in the shouts of “Go back to
Norway. Phil,” at the end of the
fight.
"Strbiltng. cool and confident,

man and never was good enough for

Scot* Frightened
“Scott seemed frightened as soon
as the contest and wore «
worried look all through the bout.
He didn’t land a single blow and
was counted out on one knee afta
he had visited the canvas four times
before that.
“Scott is definitely out of the
running far the world’s heavyweight
title. There la little' sympathy
with him in hie own country now,
for he has thrown away his last
chance of meeting Max Schmellng
In a championship contest.
"The American knew, of coune,
even before the fight, that he would
win. He had seen Scott box and
said to me some days ago:
Stribling Confident
“ ’I can lick this fellow. He has
a good left, but there is no go in
him.’
"Scott said about the same thing
to me Just before the fight. “I Can
win," he said. Believe me, you
will see a different Scott tonight
from the one at Miami.”
“I was not impressed with Stir
ling's defense' tonight, but he had
no cause to reveal a defense. He is
the best boxer from America seen
here in many years.
Shoots of Foul
‘There were shouts of “foul” when
Stribling first sent Scott down for
the count of nine, but t*pse shouts
were quickly hushed when Referee
Russell waved his hand contemptu
ously to the timekeeper who was
counting steadily.
“Scott went down four times in
the first round from left hooks to
the body, but none of the blows were
foul. Stribling had no need to foul
Scott. He could lick him well and
truly without fouling and his tiger
rushes found Scott's defense as wide
open as a barn door.
"Tonight offered no ret) test of
stribllng’s quality. He used no
'punch , of real strength and he real
] y found no need to be quick footed
f or Scott was very slow,
“Stribling was the easiest winngr
seen here in years in a heavyweight
battle. English ring followers
highly of him before this
fight and now thousands look to him
to win the world’s championship. We
