Republicans are making
much of their proposal to cut
income taxes a straight 20 per
cent At the first blush this
looks like something that will
please everyone- since just a
bout everyone these days pays
income faxes.
But when one studies the
proposal it does not "look so
to,; since a straight 20 per
cent tax cut would help those
in tl.e higher ' brackets
but
bring verv little relief to those
in the 1 -wer brackets.
In proposing such a tax re
duction 'he Republicans, true
to form, are lo, rung ;t tor the
big fellow" 'fend neglecting the
"little' fellow."
The only sane thing for Coh
eres.-; to do is to lei the pre
sent tax rate stay where it -is. .
take live extra money collected,
and start paying off the stag
gering natiotial debt.
Consider what a 20 per-cent
tax cut would mean:
A tax payer'who earns $2,000
wotilc ; save $40.00 a year or a
bcut 80 cents a week.
The person w ho earns $4,000
\\o. Ad save $80 00 or about
$1 tiO a week.
.l'iie p-is< n with, a $3.00 ni
si me w uld save $100 or about
$2.00 a week
The man who pays taxes on
S7-.000 would save some $200 or
$.»0 a week.
1 he $10,000 income earner
w ulsi s.r. c’ about $<00 or $8 00
a w i ek.
Now we get into the higher
brackets. Tlie $25,000 income
earner would save about $1800
or some $35,00. a week.
The man with a 5100,000 in
ccn'.itv -;Jd save m- re than $12.
000 .or hr tuxes or nearly $240
a week.
And tlie inct me earner with
$250,000 to report would save
nearly $40,000 or around $750.00
a week.
Who would the 20 percent
cut help most?
The "big boy " who have al
w, ys supported the Republican
tl-.erc is to be any cut in
