Spain-and it’s a peculiar co-lncl-;

is so ur, stiategically ctrof^t^niiv situated i that botn w
communism and Western democracy
would give mufth to see it under
their respective ferns' and within
their respective rones of influence.
For what happens in Spain will
have a mighty effect on the political
trend in France—where the commu
nistic electoral vote has been run
ning neck and neck with that of the
opposition — and consequently upon
the whole of western Europe.
World attention has been
to the Spanish crown by none less
than Generalissimo Franco himself.
He has asked his parliament to de
clare that Spain still is a monarchy
and to designate the procedure for
selecting the next ruler. Thus the
dictator would seem to be paving the
way for the returrt— sooner or la
ter—of one of the royal princes to
assume the crown which was aban
doned by Alfonso XII when the re
public was established in 1931. Don

economic effect on his country be-
a modicum of understanding and
guts (if one may be permitted this
very un-regal expression) he may
give his liberty-loving people the
leadership they need to escape to
talitarian communism.
The late King George was a color
less individual who lacked leader
ship-lacked guts. What the new
king, Paul,, wllj produce remains to
be seen but, he scarcely cart beless
efficient than his brother.
This is, of course, a particularly
critical moment for the Athens gov
ernment. It might inspire the red
elements to redouble their efforts to
overthrow the government, though
paradoxically the svaing grace in this
instance could lie in the very weak
ness of the late king. He provided
little guidance or personality to be
missed by people or government.
However, it’s equally possible that
the anti-communists may find a
way of strengthening their position
as tire result of the wholly un
expected death of King George.
Thus far there has been no indi
cation that the position of Greece,
as one of the key bastions of demo
cracy against aggressive commun
ism, has been changed. President
Truman's proposal for help to this
firey little Balkan state still stands,
and Congress continues its study of
the proposition. The Greek govern
