NEW YORK —UP). Manhattan ts
the big noise In New York, says the
New York City League for Less
Noise. Among the other borouehs
Brooklyn is runner-up, especially
when the baseball Dodgers are in
town.
The league cites police records to
show that city police issuad 205,660
formal warnings to noise makers
and arrested or issued summons
in 45,345 cases during 1946. There
were 8,600 warnings about noisy
children, 60,000 warnings to game
players. Two-thirds of the arrests
were for being “loud and boisterous."

BELLE CHASSE, La. (U.R) — Bur
led deeply in concrete vaults here
are the grimmest souvenirs of war.
The U. S. Navy says even the vaults
are rot safe enough for this “vola
tile backwssn of war” — munitions
once Intended for use against
Japan.
So the Navy Is moving them to a
safer place, some 500 fathoms
(3,000 feet) below the waves of the
Gulf of Mexico, at Area X.
Included in the stores are cor
roded mines, weather-whipped am
munition, bombs that may have
seen too much sun on a Pacific atoll,
the brilliant red flags when LST 528
and other explosives that bring out

Startles France
CHERBOURG UP) — A 30-ton
machine, made in America and
shipped to France for use In the
Renault automobile factory,
stumped engineers after they un
loaded it from the ship.
The railroads were unable to
transport it in one piece, and the
engineers were afraid that bridges
would break down under Its weight
If It were carried by truck.
Despite snow and Ice on the
road, however, the engineers had
to chance It and using a captuied
Germany artillery transport and
tractor they virtually inched their
way to the capital. The bridges
held up. The 220 mile trip took
four days and a half to the fae
tory gate, where a wheel broke
under the machine's weight Just as
it arrived.
Flopsy For Mopsy
Chases Tears Away
CHTCAOO (t P)—Policemen Otis
Gilsow and Herbert Rothstetn
went out to get a dog that had
been struck by a ear. The owner,
Gale McMurdd, 6, pleaded for a
chance to nurse the mangled
"Mopsy” back to health. But It
was a hopeless case. The officers
had to take It away and destroy It.
