Empires Are AsGuimoderi As Siage j Coaches
And Are Coming To An End, Mackenzie Says }
BY DeWITT MACKENZIE
AP Foreign Affairs Analyst
The warfare which has errupted !

tions that the day of empires is
f “ dln «
To under,,and ,he callSP of the
current crisis we must go back a
bit. The revolutionary Indonesian
Republic has been the de facto gov

aii agreement whereby a United
States of Indonesia, encompassing
both the Republic and the remaind
er of the East indies, would come
into being in 1949.
This new nation was to have do
minion status. Holland was to re
tain a hand In foreign relations, de
fense, finance and in subjects of an
economic or cultural nature. The
queen of Holland also was to be
queen of the dominion. Disagree
ment over the method of imple
menting the, new government is cre
ated with precipitating the latest
upheaval.
However, I think we must go
deeper than that. If we could look
nto the mind of the Indonesian we
Ikely should encounter some such
: easonlng as this:
"The Dutch and the Indonesians
are racially as far apart as the
poles. We have little In common.
The queen of the Netherlands is a
benevolent and lovable personage,
but she is not one of us. The mem
hers of her government are foreign
ers to us. We want absolute sever
ance from Holland, so that we may
rule ourselves In these fairy lands
of wealth which have been Inhabit
ed by our race for untold genera
tions. It isn't that we like tho
Dutch the less, but that we like our
absolute freedom the more.”

on the wealth of Indonesia.
The same is true of all imperial |
powers, because the demand for In- j
dependence Is running around the j
world like a theme song. We are
seeing Its effect In the custe sub
continent of India which has been j
granted Its freedom by England.
Britain also is relinquishing Bur-,
ma —bw torn by a bloody Internal j
political crisis.
Around the corner the French are
battling to keep French Indo-Chlna !
In line. French and Italian colo
nies In Africa are reaching for the j
sun. Egypt is demanding the with
drawal of British troops from her
soil and relinquishment of control
over the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan.
And so the story goes. Empires al
as outmoded as the stage-coach.
This doesn’t mean that all im
perial possessions are going by the
board over-night. Hoyever, t h e
time Is fast passing when intel
ligent people of different races can
be bound together by a jewel stud
ded crown and sceptre.
