pone is slowly heaued for the
., ieen. There have been secret
ueeUng.' in Chicago between film
Kprcmitatives, Als widow and the
attorney for the Capone estate.
"DHiinger" grossed nearly $2,000,
000. Hollywood figures the Capone
story would crack $10,000,000, but. of
course, ho one in Hollywood worries
dait it wouicl make Hi, 000 more ju
venile delinquents. Any film based
on Capone's hie would be the a glorifl-
1 ation—no matter how story
v as handled.

The Capone family attorney lias ev
il suggested a Hollywood actor the
, miiy would like to see in the role.
And -here’s .1 laugh— the actor is
jovial Edward Arnold.
Tasked Arnold if he would play
the role if given the chance. The
answer I received was far from what
' expected. 3aid Arnold:
"Well, I don't know. I'd have to
read the script first. I only met
Capone once. In some ways he was
n very sweet character. Maybe you
t lPr talk to rny press agent."
Later, through the M-O-M publi
city department. Arnold issued this
„ ftt tcment:
"1 wouldn't portray Al Capone
and I'm sure my studio wouldn't let

should be against the best interests |
at the American people. I certain
ly do not want to play any role
which, in any way will help to glorl*
fv crime or Contrioute to the delin
quency of the you'll of the naitqn."
Then refusing to burn any
bridges Arnold said; ’But it is con
(eivublc that organizations devoted
to the prevention of crime and Ju
\ 1 Mile delinquency might approve
of a story about Capone, providing
it would prove a deterrent law-breakers^ to
gangsters or embryo
But that, I say, would be impos
sible. Any tilm version of Capone's
life—from "fame" to the federal
prison and death -would leave him
a hero in the eyes of impressionable
kids.
Lawrence Tierney, who played
"DiUlnger” on ttie screen, was more
positive about the effects of such a
film on juveniles. I udmired his
land. He said:
"The kids end young people who
such pictures, learned sadly
do not stop to analyze the
character of the man but
only the udventuer and excite
I'm convinced that such pic
tures do great harm to impression
id" minds "
