Petrified Forest
Has Upright Trees
BUFFALO. Wyo. (INS)—A noted
geologist declared recently that a
pet,rifled forest, standing east of
Buffalo Is probably unique In the
United States.
James D. Bump, director of the
museum at South Dakota School of
Mines, said that the forest is rare
because the petrified trees are up
right and still have their roots.
Professor Bump told a group of
Buffalo residents:
"X believe you have something. It
seems strange to me that the area
has not been ‘discovered’ and dis
played commercially before now.”
I The forest, 10 miles east of Bur—
j falo, has dozens of trees in a stand
| ing position, including one excep
I tional specimen over 10 feet high
and about five feet in diameter.
MIGHT BE ANCIENT SEQUOIAS
Bump suggested that the trees
may have been ancient sequoias,
but that the specimens could be ac
curately typed by a paleobotanlst, a
plant specialist.
The director said that the red
shale hills in the district are rem
nants of a vast burned out lignite
field dating back millions oftyears.
As the trees were covered over,
a solution trickled down through
the crevasses and each cell in the
wood was replaced by a solution of
minerals which turned to 3tone.
Keep electric cords dry. A wet
cord Is danyorous and may cause a
snort circuit. Also moisture may
damage the protective covering
over the wire.
