However, like most ptirases which represent a play on words, it could lead us into a faulty estimate of the situation if we didn’t watch out. We might get the impression that things are cooler than they actual lv are. In Greece f ;r example,, we see actual gun-play which the Athens government charges is being foster ed by neighboring Soviet satellites, 1 DETf^AD M AUf FOR WINTER s DRIVING • Jeep* • Light Trucks • Mud and Snow Design. • Non-Directional Tread. f You can depend on our Recap« ping to give you thousands of miles of SAFE driving! Then there’s the terrible Chinese civil war, which the Nan king Nationalist government says is being aided by Moscow. Moreover,- strong-arm methods are being employed in various a reas. This is notably evident with in that zone of eastern Europe which Moscow ’ is endeavoring to (ommunize and consolidate into a bloc entirely under Russian domi nation. ' y. A symposium of the European situation by experienced Associated Press correspondents attributes the following views to competent ob servers: United States foreign po'icy—as contrasted to the Kremlin’s—is op cnly supported by overwhelming na t)cnal majorities in the west But in eastern Europe, these observers agree, the will of the majority is jiaralyzed by communist police act ton and Russia's immediate military power. ‘‘In lands behind the so lron curtain the dictated process of sovietization is ruthlessly being speeded up Red minorities are tightening their governmental grip. This, however, represents consoli dation, not expansion, of the Krem lin's authority. It-is like a general suspending a fruitlJss offensive and ordering his forces to dig in at least temporarily on a static line.” Well, how close is our "Cold War” to “Hot War”? Appros of this James K. Pollock, former advisers on U. S. governmental affairs to General Lucius D. Clay, military governor of the American zone in Germany, declares that “we might as well dig in and prepare for the inevitable conflict” if a peace set lelment splits Germany into a So viet-dominated area and an area controlled by the Western powers. Pollock makes this statement in a report prepared for the Foreign Policy Association, a private re search organization. He says that at the forthcoming Foreign Min isters’ Conference in London, to try to write a German peace treaty, the choice is quite clearly for peace or a continuation of the present Cold War. The younger body contains rela tively more water than the older, but. in spite of this, infants and young children are more prone to develop water lack. An infant who lias been sick a few days with vo -nitirg, diarrhte or hich fever will quickly develop a flabby, wrinkled giant powers—Russia and A- . \ two tnerica — the London periodical ’New Statesman” advances the in tvresting thesis that this can be pre vented if England and her neigh bors “exploit the balance of power between the East and West.” ' Fortunately for us,” says the News statesment, “neither America nor Russia can hope to attack each other without acquiring Europe as a base of operations. By firmly de nying it to both we should reduce the risk of war.” Maybe that’s an *!on.’ In any event, despite the that our “Cold War” is warm in spots, the situation strikes me as sdding up to the view expressed in this column long ago—that there’s little likelihood of a major conflict for years to come. If the Marshall Plan holds communism on its pre sent line, the position will be vastly improved. If the Red tide sweeps through to the English channel, then war is probable in due course.
