The Griffin baseball team drop
ped another game to the Alexander
City • Millers' Sunday afternoon
there 17 to 1 after losing here Sat
urday night 3 to 2.
Manager Fred Campbell used al
most, every player on the bench in
'rying to stem the tidal wave of
Miller runs that crossed the plate.
Griffin used four pitchers in the
drtlton-out affair and Griffin made
lust as many errors as they got
hits. Griffin got one run on six
hits and made six errors. Griffin’s
pitchers gave up 14 base on balls.
Alex City scored in every Inning
except the seventh and eighth.
! I They scored four: in the first and
second, two in the third and five
| in the fourth. They added one in
i the fifth and sixth. Griffin’s lone
run came in the ninth inning and
i- avoided a shutout.
Hiram Jones started on the
| mound and was followed by Harry
Creamer. Frank Mihal and Camp
I bell.
i The two straight losses dropped
Griffin to sixth place. The team
goes to Carrollton tonight for a
game and a win would put them
back in fifth place.
Saturday night'.; 3 to 2 loss to
Alex City was a hear* breaker.
Weird (to use a c.hrltable adjective)
umpiring plus eratic base running
cost Griffin the game
In the last of *he third inning
Campbell polled a long drive into
foul territory off left. Held. Um
pire Taylor, behind the plate, was
so intent on watcihng to see if the
ball went fair or foul he failed to
see that left fielder V/ooley, of the
Millers, had caught the ball—and
the base umpire must have been
watching something m the stands
for he too “didn’t see the catch.
The Millers howled—and evidently
the two umpires male up their
minds that they would “even it up"
tc the Millers and get into their
good graces once again.

blue gave Griffin the short end of
j the stick. In the same third, when
j the two umpires “didn't see the
catch’ Manager Fred Campbell I
was
a victim of their “get even” policy.
He was called out at third, after
hitting a double, as he slid under
the throw. Even the Miller third
baseman seemed surprised at the
decision.
Then in the ninth, when Griffin
ame to bat trailing 1 to 3 Camp
bell singled and scored when Black
well tripled. Kane walked, only to
be caught out in an attempted
double stal. Allen fanned and
Stock,, hit a sharp one to deep
short. He beat tire tftrow to first
by inches—but that ‘■•even up” po
licy worked again and the umps
declared the game was over. Had
the umpire called that decision 'as
it should have been ca’led, and the
writer was in the pre ,s box with a
good view of the play, while the first
baseman was between -he base um
pire and the base, Blackwell would
have scored and the game would
have been at least lie-1.
In turning in the official score
for Saturday nights game, Col.
William Beck, official scorer, could
with plenty of pronrietv put down
the two umpires as playing for
Alexander City and each making
several “assists.”
Griffin eratic base running,
which also contribute 1 to the loss
came in the second inning and in
too many chances and were caught
Savage, who did not figure in these
incidents, stole one base during the
game. He also got a hit. Campbell i
was the hitting star for Griffim
with a single, a double and a triple j
*
in four times at bat. Blackwell
poled a three bagge- into right
field Evins got a double and Stock
and Allen got one hit.
Stockvvell who is credited with 1
losing the game pitched about as
consistent ball as has been seen
here for six innings, giving up five
hits, walking three end striking
out three. He held the Millers hit
less for the first three innings.
Griffin and Alex City each got
eight hits. Stockwell .was relieved
by Saverance, who gave up two hits
and was taken out tor a -pingla, }iit
ter. Votaw finished the game.
