By STERLING SLAPPEY
fiTLANA — (JP )—The 1948 Souto
eastern Conference football race al
ready is the finest lesson imaginable
in "don’t pick your champion until
the race Is over.” • l’.
A glance at the standings which
show Georgia, Mississippi and fu
lane fighting it out for the champ
ionship is enough to malr,s the
spines of experts curl and the gam
blers go to church.
Neither of the three was Ctoxi
sidered a championship contender
last spring and early fall by coaches
and athletic directors, ,but now that
the season is almost done, only
Ihcsa three have a chance.
And to make the experts look
even worse there is a chance for a
tlje for the championship which ver
bally was awarded to Georgia Tech
Without dissent before toe season
started. ,S - : .
Just below the leaders is Georgia
T.-ch, losers on successive Saturdays
to Tennessee and Alabama.
Next are toe Vanderbilt Com
modores, a team which probably,
would be a major contender If toe
season lasted long enough. '■

»1* local football players were
nominated by the today Griffin for Daily the All State]
ream News.
Thre.s were nominated from Or if
fin High and three from Spalding
High.
At Griffin High they are Cecil
‘Red” Roberts, center; Charles
Hopper, guard, and Bobby Dunn,
fullback.
Mffrtin, At Spalding they are Billy "Dad"
tackle; J o h n n y Gaddy,
guard, and Kenneth Kiwbem, full
back. / 1
Griffin’s Bobby Dunn Is one of
the bast offensive and defensive
backs In the state. He Is a 00
minute man and his opponents are
kept on their toes by his shifty
running while on the offense and
his brilliant defensive playing. Re
also is a good man to have for those
much needed points after touch
downs. Out on the field he plays
his very best and is one of the best
candidates for the All-State Team.
Cedi Roberts was nominated for
the same position at which he made
the All-State Team last year, cen
ter. This position is one of the teams
most vital spots and there is
center in the state more capable of
handling It than Griffin's Red
Roberts. Although a leg Injury
'United his playing this year, the
ime he played was important to
the Gold Wave. His ability to op4n
a hole In the center of an oppon
ent's line when on the offense is
plendid and his ability to keep that
same hole closed, when on the de
'ense shows .that he is the most
apable man In the state at center.
One more mam on the Gold Wave
team was nominated and he is
Guard Charlie Hopper. Charlie
Hopper Is a very fine defensive line
man. If a play by play account were
kept of every man who made a t*c
Rie, Hopper’s name would top the
’1st. He also Is a good man on the
iffense as he has proven. Playing

other good nomination. His driving

as an equestrian many of my friends
call me "bareback Hoople.”
Because of my failure to inter
view “The Champ” I am humiliated
and would tender my resignation,
except that I fear you would accept
It much too quickly.
Let’s Just call last week off. Let’s
forget that I said Spaldiing would
whip Fulton—that Tech would win
from Alabama—that Northwestern
would take the measure of Notre
Dame.
Let’s Just remember that I picked
Griffin High to win over College
Park, Georgia to whip Au-um and
Clemson to' win.
Let’s be rather charitable to Amos
B. Hoople. My head may be bowed
by my poor Judgement the past
week—but my spirit is still okey.
Next week I positively promise to
pick a 100 percent slate of winners.
Until then let’s remember my glor
tons past and draw the mantle
charity on toe present.
