GHSA Ruling Doesn’t
Change Griffin's Spot
- In Region Standings
„ Griffin’s 0-0 tie with Gainesville
wiU cost the Gold Wave the Re
gion Four Class A championship
unless something happens — and
quick. f
7 he Georgia High School Asso
ciation’s decision not to count ties
ir. eetermining champions caused a
m * !urr y of excitement here when it
was announced Monday. Many fans
thought that Griffin was back in
the running. '■
But it doesn’t work out that way.
Ties won’t be counted in figuring
percentages. But the percentage
* will count
Griffin has won two region
games, tied one and lost one. Not
counting the tie, as the GHSA de
cided, this gives Griffin a percent
age of .666.
LaGrange has won four and lost
one for a percentage of .800. De
catur has won three and lost one
for a percentage of .760. Thus, La-
4 Grange and Decatur remain the big
dogs in the region.
But should both Decautr and La
C-range lose or tie their final games
Griffin would be back in the run
ning.
As things stand now, regardless
of the ties-don’t-count decision,
Griffin is in the No. 3 spot.

Spalding High’s Wolfpack will
face some more mighty stilt com
petition Friday night when
-lose out their season with the Red
i-ephants of Gainesville hens.
This will be the -Wolfpack's last
.am* for this s./.son and may be
the hardest. The Red Elephants are
of the strongest ball clubs in the
,tate and they have some of the
finest backs and linemen to be
found on any high school football
earn.
To prove that they are hard to
handle, they defeated the LaGrange
Grangers last week after the Gran
gers had wqn eight straight games
and had their hands almost on the
'
itaie championship. * s
Jackie Roberts, ISO pound half
back, paces th,? Gainesville attack
and is tied with Griffin’s Bobby
Dunn for third place in scoring.
Marvin Free, 202 pounds fullback,
has lately been stealing the spot
light from Roberts and will ire the
one to keep your eyes on. He is a
.powerful plunger and fast runner
and is good for 60 minutes of play
ing time. Jackie Roberts on ’'the
other hand may not see too much
action due to an injured shoulc'er.
Earnest Nivens. Gainesville center,
Is the line’s mainstay and lias
plenty of power. He is well capable
of the job be holps down and will
be another man to watch when they
meet the Wolfpack Friday night.
Sugar Ray Wins
But Looks Lousey
PHILADLPHIA — m~ Maybe it
was his “be-bop whiskers” but Ray
(Sugar) Robirison Monday night
didn’t look like the man Joe Louis
recently called “pound for pound,
tne greatest fighting machine in
the ring today.”
The Harlem dandy won a un
animous 10-round non-titie deci
sion over undersized Bobby Lee of
Baltimore as many in the arena
T
crowd of 4,792 cried “draw” at the
fight’s end.
The welterweight champion
weighing in at 154—was far from
tfu devastating fighting man. who
won the title, two years ago from
Tommy Bell after five years as the
recognized “uncrowned welter -
