CHICAGO —4fi— The University
of Chicago, armed with its new
synchro-cyclotron, hopes to blast
the nucleus of an atom Into its
constituent parts by early 1960.
Dr. Samuel K. Allison, noted nu
clear physlclit a® 1 he ad of the U»
nlverslty’s institute for nuclear stu
dies, said the huge syncnro-cy
c j otron being built at the univer
gjty w m cost 124200,000, and will
be one of the three largest in the
world.
The University of California’s cy
clotron, which has a 184-inch m..g
netic pole face diameter, is the lar
gest. Columbia University has an
instrument with a diameter of 170
inches, the same as Chicago’s will
have.
But Allison said the California
instrument has not yet produced
a beam in excess of the 430,030,000
electron-volts which scale model
tests indicate the Chicago machine
wili be able to produce.
Eventually, Allison said, Univer
sity of Chicago scientists hope to
learn what holds the nucleus of the
atom together with the aid of the
synchro-cyclotron.
