20 Percent Above "
last Thanksgiving
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
■' 'S ' • , * - \ , '&W
Turkey prices this Thanksgiving
week have been nearly hi percent
higher tf w* last year—bht they do
not seem to have scared many
housewives out of the market.
J On the contrary, it appears the
demand—coupled with decreased
production—may cause a six ;e
of birds tor Christmas.
, A survey of key cities showed pri
ces for the holiday bird averaging
about 75 cents a pound fpr young
hen turkeys, and about 86 cents for
bigger of 18 pounds and
over.
There were abundant supplies of
the other good foods that make the
TD^nksgivifig dinner—*n<l al prices
Just about the same as last year’s
Cranberries, celery and citrus fruits
were especially plentiful.
Pm dressed top-grade small tur
Xeys. some stores In New York, Al
lank and San Francisco were ask
ing 85 to 8| cents a pound—and
getting it.
The same quality fowl cost shop
pers around 35 to *0 cents back
In pre-war INI.
fere’s the price range for tur
.eys urder '16 pounds hi Some re
rese- .live cities; New York 75
■?5 cents a pound, Chicago and, Den-
67-89, with the average 79.
City 73-83, Dallas 73-80 and
Francisco 64-89. The heavier toms
were generally being quoted abput
; 10 oenta cheaper.
Most retailers had expected many
housewives would balk at the pri
ces. But food Circles Said that,
‘udging from the volume of trade
during the first two days this week,
shoppers apparently were deter
nbied to have turkey regardless.

No doubt about it. Any day can be Thanksgiving
for the man who has enough of the right kind of
insurance. Yon groan over paying premiums year f
in and year ont, and then something happens. Your
house burns down or you are unfortunate enough
to badly hurt a youngster with your car. Without
insurance protection you are faced with a serious
loss or ciaitn. What you have paid out in premiums
fades into insignificance besieje the amount which
the insurance company pays. That is why we say
that any day can be Thanksgiving for our policy- A,
holders.

Army Is Pk
Draftees W m
Care Than in War
‘ WA8HINTON -CSV
The Army
apparently is picking and choosing
its draftees more carefully than
during the war, a Selective Service
official said today.
Of *4,000 men, examined since
early November In 43 states, he
said 33,000 have been rejected ac
cording to incomplete figures from
local boards. ^ *
,
This 70 percent ra$e, roughly
double the wartime rejection rate of
35.8 percent, maybe due to stricter
physical standards §et by Army
doctors, the draft official said.
Most of the men being examined
are In the 24 and 25 -year-old
groups, though some boards are
down to their 23-yefj-olds and «
lew to the 22s. So probably most of
these men were looked over and
turned down for physical - reasons
to*, lb. «r. •» -U.
.
Draft officials havo estimated
that only 70,000 men In the 22-$
age group would be eligible for
compusory military service because
of exemptions for martial status,
previous service and other reasons.
The Army plans to induct 15,000
men in December and 20,000 men in
January. This month 10,000 men
have been called up.
The Army is planning to get mopt
of its draftees from those regis
trants under 22. Preliminary esti
mates in the thfee bottom age
groups'show more than 200,0000 71
year-olds; about 500,000 20 -year
olds; and some 800,0000 10-year
olds. About 1,000,000 come of draft
age each year. f
When the training camps get Intr
full swing the Amy expects h
raise its draft calls to 30,000 month;
ly, thus adding 360,000 new men
cjach year. *
