TOKYO —(IP)— America’s last
Cavalry division has passed into
the record books marking the end
0 j an era 0 j mounted soldiers who
i made history in the conquest of
| the.American Western plains.

The old Inf Cavalry Division, eur

tral Honshu, is, being reorganized
as an Infantry division and has
been renamed the "1st Cavalry Di
vision (Infantry).’’

ed near Yokohama, the unit has
been on occupation duty in Japan.

ment, which was organized on Feb.
2, 1901, took two tours of duty in
the Philippines from 1903 to 1909,
and from 1909 to 1911, and later
returned from its overseas tour to
the United States to guard the Mex
lean border during the Pancho
Villa uprisings in 1914 and 1919.
In February, 1919, the regiment
first squadron was ordered to the
Panama Canal Zone, where it stay
ed until 1921. The 12th Cavalry
Joined the 1st Cavalry Division in
1932, replacing the 1st Cavalry Re
giment, which was reorganized into
a mechanised unit.
Fought on Leyte
Fifty days of continous combat
against the Japanese in the rugged
mud-soaked mountains of Western
Leyte, Philippines, was Just one of
its combat accomplishments in Wor
ld War n. It was the 12th Cavalry
that shoved on through to deliver
the final blow* to the ztuborn Jap
forces on Leyte. A unit of the 12th
Cavalry fought from room to room
in the successful battle for the Man
ila Hotel In early 1945.
Roth brigades in the division, the
lft and 2nd Cavalry Brigades, have
| been abolished in the new triangu
lar 1st Cavalry Division. Thi* brings
to a close the existance of one of
the oldest Cavalry units in the
American Army. Headquarters
Troop of the 1st Cavalry Brigade
celebrated its 115th anniversary on
March 2, 1949. Organized in 1833,,
it was then known as Company H,
the Regiment of Dragoons, first
official United States Army Cavalry
unit.
Although relatively young—the
11st Cavalry Division was organized
on Sept, 13, 1921—the division still
has left three of the most famous
regiments in the United States Ar
| my—the 5th, 7th and 8th Cavalry
The 5th Cavalry was organized in
j 1855 under the command of Lieut.
' Col. Robert E. Lee. Both organi
zed in 1866, the 7th and 8th Caval
rys rode over the Western plains
{tribes. : in grim pursuit of warring Indian

Custer at the Little Big Horn in
1876.
Mount Rainier, Washington, is an
extinct volcano 14,408 feet high.
