DISCIPLES EAT PASSOVER WITH HIM IN UPPER ROOM
Mark Luke 22:7-38.
By NEWMAN CAMPBELL
THROUGHOUT the ages peo
pie have celebrated important
dates with feasts with th*ir fam
ilies, with neighbors and friends.
Our Bible records many such
feasts.
In troublous times, such as
these, meetings of congenial peo
ple either In private homes or In
public eating places, helps to
cheer us and keep our minds
from dwelling too much on dis
agreeable future possibilities.
The Passover—the time when,
before the exodus from Egypt,
Jthe angel of death passed over
Ithe homes of Israel's • people to
slay the Egyptian firstborn and
so persuade Pharaoh to let the
Israelites go—had been celebrat
ed with dear ones for centuries.
It was natural, then, that
Jesus, who knew His death was
near, should desire to observe it
with those nearest and dearest to
Him—His disciples.
His disciples asked Jesus where
he wanted to eat the passover,
and He answered that two of
them should go into the city—
Jerusalem—and there they would
see a man bearing a water pitch
er on his head. They were to
follow him, and where he entered
they should tell the master of the

THE STATE BANK
By: D. it. Camming, President
Attest: P. Westmoreland, Cashier
(SEAL)
"One of you that eateth with Me
shall betray Me,” which made
them all sorrowful, and caused
them to ask Him one by one, "Is
it I?” His answer was simply.
"It is one of the twelve.” Did
Juijas Iscariot’s face betray his
guilt, we wonder?
Luke tells us that even in that
hour, some of the disciples fell
to disputing as to which should
be greatest among them, but
Jesus reiterated what He had
told them before, that those who
would be greatest must serve,
even as He came to serve man
kind. How could these close
friends of Jesus be so small and
callous when death was so near
to their beloved Master?
Turning to Peter, the Lord
said that He knew Satan desired
to have him, "that he may sift
you as wheat, but I have prayed
for thee, that thy faith fail not:
and when thou art converted,
strengthen thy brethren.”
Peter answered, “Lord, I am
ready to go with Thee, both into
prison land to death.” But the
Lord answered sadly, "I tell thee,
Peter, the cock shall not crow
this day, before that thou shalt
thrice deny that thou knowest
I Me.”
The Lord knew His people, bet*
ter than they knew themselves.
Peter was doubtless sincere when
he swore to Jesus that he would
go with Him Into a prison, or
even suffer death with Him, but
he did not know his own weak
ness. He did not know the panic
of fear that would overwhelm him
when he wai In danger and would
cause him to deny that he knew
His Master In the hour of peril.
He probably could not know—
aa Jesus did—how near the tragic
moment waa when he would aee
his friend tried before determined prejudiced
churchmen who were
this menace to their religious
view* and their position# of au
thority In the temple waa to be
removed from the world.
Jesus knew full well what waa
In ator* for Him. He knew His
enemies well enough to realise
that they would leave no stone
unturned to do Him to death. He
knew too, that the crowd# that
had gathered around Him when
He taught them, or healed their
lick, were fickle, and would turn
