NE WYORK—i/P.i—O nce upon a
time there was a wealthy njian
named J. Waddington Gotrocks.
Money ran in his family—but it
never ran out. -
Waddington lived up to his ar
mpits in four-leab clovers. He kept
a staff of 30 girls who did nothing
all day long but clip his bond coup
ons. And every five years he had
to retire them and hire a new crew
—they got musclebound.
Once somebody asked” Wadding
ton how much dough he really
had. He hired the National Cash
Register Company to build him a
special machine to count it. The
machine got up to, ten digits—
something like $1,000.000,000—and
then it blew a gasket.

old patterns and categories seemed
to be in order. But she was rest

At first she tried to reason her
self into normal drowsiness. But
all the hobgoblins of the past
four years howled through her
thoughts. The words: “One world,

The sane, calm voices over the air

; time he w alked through his 999
room castle and counted 1,998 frie- I
nds who were staying with him.
And they all had ordered breakfast
in bed—quail on toast, washed
; down with french champagne,
I Then someone asked:
“Yeah, Waddington. but do they
like you for yourself? Maybe it's
your money they’re after.’’
Well, as I say, Waddington was
a simple rich man. This thought
had never occurred to him. Just
for a joke he had four butlers blow
a silver bugle call and rounded up
all his pals for lunch in the main
dining room.
When they were all gathered a
round, Waddington said:
“What do you know, fellows? My
last check just bounced!"
or be killed. The stench o< hell
was in the uranium piles.
,
Mrs. Malone sat straight up in
bed. She thought: “I'm going nuts!
I’ve got to get out of here and
go back to the city and people
who have some sense. That wom
an!”
She threw back the bed cover
ings. got to her feet and began
hastily to dress The cubicle
seemed suddenly too small, like a
prison. Mrs. Malone pinned her
heavy braided haiT into place,
packed the few things she had out,
jammed her hat down on her head
and snatched up her coat
* *
r THE tar door of the kitchen stood
open and the entryway beyond
was illumined by a tube of blue
light. Mrs Malone could hear
voices in the salon, and peering
at her wrist watch in the blue
gloom, saw that it was after mid
night
Cautiously she hunted for the
door, which she remembered when
closed seemed part of the metal
wall. An Instrument panel of
fered a possibility of escape. She
took a chance and turned one of
the knobs.
Instantly the silver screen sep
arating the entryway from the
mam compartment folded back
Mrs. Everson and the Marchese
Dellacasa were playing gin rum
my. They .glanced up, startled, at
Mrs. Malone. Then Mrs. Everson
spoke In her dark voice.
“You’re trying to run away,
aren’t you?" she said.
“Yes.”
“Come hem."
“Please let me go." Mr*. Malone
pleaded. “Please open the door
and let me go. I’U hitch-hike back
to Los Angeles.”
"Com* here,” Mi*. Eve r eon re
peated.
Mrs. Malone took a few steps
forward as the Marchese Dellacasa
rose politely and faced her. He

Panic broke out. In exactly 27
minutes every guest had packed
his bag and left. Most of them went
to the Grand Central Station. A
rumor had spread that an innocent
Texas oil millionaire are arriving in
town.
He picked up a, telephone and
called the zoo. * > v
“I’m donating^ you aiWher $10,
000,000." he said. "In retui\ | will you
do me a small favor? ,
“Why certainly—what it It, Mr
Gotrocks?’’ Replied the zoo direct

“Fix me up a small room near
the gorilla cage." said Waddington.
"I feel a little lonely.”

was a man of medium height, thin,
with a worn, lined face and deep
lidded eyes. His expression was
remote, yet gentle and somehow
friendly
Mrs. Malone, who was accus
tomed to judging strangers, liked
him at once. Since she hadn’t ex
pected to, she was thrown oil
balance. She returned his smile
nervously and waited for Mrs
Everson to speak.
"Has Rudy told you why I’m
making this trip?”
“Yes. That’s why I’ve changed
my mind about the job.”
“You’re a fool. With me, you
have a chance to live through an
atomic blast that will destroy
most of the world and most of its
inhabitants.”

1 1 MALONE searched her
mind for a reply. At first
nothing came. Then, with a flash
of inspiration, she explained that
she didn’t feel worthy—she’d be
happier to perish with the others.
Mrs. Everson made an impera
tive gesture with her long, painted
hand. 1
“Angelo," she said to the Mar
chese. “persuade her. After all,
we can’t do without a cook!"
The Marchese smiled again.
Gently, very gently he put his
hand on Mrs. Malone’s arm,
turned her about, and urged her
across the entry and the kitchen
to her room. There he took the
suitcase and placed it on a chair,
hung up her coat and even re
moved her hat.
“Now,” he said, “get a good
night’s sleep, . You are quite
safe. I assure you.”
Mrs. Malone tried again to make
sense Trembling she sat on the
bed; she felt weak and, somehow,
defeated.
‘Is it true, sir, what she says?”
“I have no choice,” the Mar
chese said, “but to believe it is.”
