Isle Paradise
Is Envisioned
Near Argentina j
By ALDO FORTE
United Press Staff Correspondent
ROME —:IP<— The idea for a new
state has been borr in ancient;
Rome—"The Republic of Holy
Peace.”
A floating Garden of Eden, whose
creator has spent the past two
years perfecting the "republic’s”
constitution, the miniature nation
is to arise on a small island off
the Argentine coast, The constl
tution is ready, provisions are made
for a president and two vice-pre
sidents, and several thousand po
tential citizens are claimed already.
President of the new republic is
the man behind the idea, Don Juan
de las Flores, a 52-year-old Italo
Argentine philanthropist and pres
ident of the worldwide Progressive
Association.
The new nation, according to
Don Juan, sounds like a cross be
tween Plato’s Republic and James
Hilton’s Shangri-La. Its citizens
will be called “brothers,” it will
have no army, all lethal weapons
will be forbidden, there will be com
plete freedom of religion (although
Catholicism will be the official
state creed), official languages will
be Spanish end Italian and free
democratic elections will be held
every three vears.
Size of Elba
In an interview, Don Juan saic
negotiations for leasing the un
identified island for 99 years wens
underway with the Buenos Airis
government. He described it es
“about the s'ze of the island of 0
oa, located just below the Equator,
with a perfect climate and rich
minerai springs.” Elba has an area
Of 86 square miles.
The constitution of the new re
public first was drafted in 1947 by
Don Juan, with the aid of two
j Italian lawyers It consists of 13
ar ti c les and is similar to the sta
tu j e D f the miniature republic of
)g an Marino.
1 The republic will have an issue
j of postage stamps, will mint its
I own money, will have only experts
and technicians as ministers in
stead of a ‘nearby nation." The
republic also will sign a customs
accord with that friendly nation
According to Article 7 of the
constitution, any citizen of thts
floating paradise found buiity of
breaking the law, of scandal, of
i theft, of adultry. will be ex
or
pel led from the island
To Pick Citizens
Don Juan said “Although I io
not intend to create a Herrenfolk
of nationalistic character. T do in
tend to pick the future citizens of
my repub'ic from men of healthv
physical build, high intelligence
and sound moral character.
“The preferred women should be
behutiful. healthy young, moral
arid unmarried. Married couples, of
j course. •who have all these quail
j ties, also wi'l be accented. for elderly The
I same also can be said
I persons who wish to dedicate their
lives to the welfare of the human
race, Preference will be granted to
scientists, inventors technicians,
and specialized workers _ :
‘‘Of course,, the first child to be
born on th? Island wil|' be called
’Pacific', if *t’s a boy. and Peace,'
if it’s a girl.”

Salt Lake City dentists have
