George Allen
Halas Wins Point
By ED SAINSBURY
UPI Sports Writer
CHICAGO (UPI) -George
Alien was free today to become
head coach of the Los Angeles
Rams with the blessings and
best wishes of Chicago Bears
owner-coach George Halas, his
previous employer.
Allen, a controversial figure
since the Bears filed a breach
of contract suit a week ago to
prevent him joining the Rams,
was given his freedom when
Halas announced in court he
was dropping the suit.
Halas announced his decision
after Circuit Court Judge
Cornelius Harrington held there
was “prima facie” evidence
that Allen had breached his
contract.
“George Allen was a minor
issue,” Halas said. “The
validity of his contract was the
issue. I want to drop the suit.
Allen can go to Los Angeles.”

his attorney, Charles Short, of
the content of his statement,
but that he had planned to drop
the suit if the validity of the
contract was upheld.
Breached Contract
Harrington said the evidence
indicated Allen breached the
contract by negotiating with
Rams president Dan Reeves
without written permission
from Halas and the Bears, and
that he further breached it by
committing himself orally to
become coach of the Rams.
The outcome of the case was
hailed by National Football
League Commissioner Pete
Rozelle and Reeves. Rozella
earlier had announced he would
hold a league hearing on the
dispute.
“I’m gratified that all parties
are pleased with the outcome of
the situation,” he said.
Reeves said "everybody
seems to be happy and now
let’s go to work.”
