Food Shopping
Siiide
By United Press International
The following guide to the
nation’s food shopping buys for
this weekend was prepared by
.the U. S. Departments of
Agriculture and Interior for
United Press International.
WASHINGTON (UPI) —
Weekend shoppers will find a
good winter-harvest variety of
fruits, vegetables, and meats
awaiting them at their mark
ets, according to the Agricul
ture Department’s Consumer
and Marketing Service.
Holiday cooking still is
memory-fresh, and the brisk
weather is also a good
reminder for appetites. Think
new and bright — stuff shiny
green peppers with red to
matoes. Make January a fun
cooking month.
In most areas, beef prices
have dropped. Beef steaks,
roasts, and ground beef are
reflecting this drop. A similar,
story is told in the pork camp.
Butt cuts, ham, roasts, and
spareribs are reasonable in
most areas.
Turkey and broiler-fryers
hold their own as economic
main dishes.
The vegetable and fruit
parade from the oSuth and
Southwest continues. Beans,
cabbage, carrots, cauliflower,
celery, lettuce, onions, potatoes,
rutabagas, squash, sweet po
tatoes, and tomatoes lead the
varied parade.
Apples and bananas head the
fruit list. Avocados are plenti
ful, along with grapefruit,
lemons, grapes, and oranges.
Canned red salmon, canned
tuna, and fish sticks and
portions are plentiful.
Dixie Crystal
Offers Recipes
A number of years ago the
Savannah Sugar Refining Cor
poration decided to put recipes
on the back of its Dixie Crystals
Sugar cartons.
The recipes immediately be
came popular _ so much so
that it was decided to make a
collection of “Favorite Recipes”
from the cartons of Dixie Cry
stals.
Anyone wishing one of the
books may write to Savant^
Sugar Refining Corporation, sa
vannah, Ga. and ask for “F a
Recipes” -
vorite and “The Cookie
Jar. They’re free.

TRADITION FIRST
FRANKFORD, Ky. (up™ _
Members of the Kentucky
General Assembly are dedicat
ed to legislative progress, but
not to a point where they
neglect a Southern tradition. A
hearing was recessed Tuesday
to permit assemblymen to
devour 200 buckets of Kentucky
fried chicken. y
