In the same area, a U.S.
Marine F8 jet fighter crashed
during the Leathernecks’ “Oper
ation Double Eagle.” The pilot
parachuted safely and was
picked up by a rescue
helicopter from the 7th Fleet
carrier USS Valley Forge.
Informed sources in Saigon
reported today there may be as
many as 10 North Vietnamese
regiments, some 15,000 to 20,000
men, now operating in South
Viet Nam. The presence of
seven regiments from the
North has been confirmed.
Sources also said the North

the 37-day pause in U.S. air
raids to construct as many as
10 new surface-to-air (SAM)

Red Buildup
The Communists were said to
have worked day and night
during the bombing lull to
rebuild roads and bridges along
with a new airfield capable of
handling MIG jets. The Hanoi
regime’s air force numbers
about 70 planes.
A U.S. spokesman said late
today the name of “Operation
Masher” was being changed to
“White Wing.” This may have
indie? the beginning of a
new phase of the operation but
the spokesman gave no reason
for the name change.
Col. Harold Moore, command
ing the 3rd Brigade of the Air
Cavalry, was asked how long
the sweep through coastal
foothills and jungled mountains
would continue.
“Just as long as we can get
into a fight,” he declared.
‘Just as long as there are Viet
Cong to kill.”
Mossier Trial
Key Witness Put
Right lip Front
By H. D. QU1GG
United Press International
MIAMI (UPI) —The State of
Florida does not fool around.
When it has a key witness, it
puts him up front. Right early
in a trial.
And so, today: Roscoe
Brown, handyman.
He cleans things. Cleans
good, the state claims. So if
there is a palm print found on
a kitchen surface that Roscoe
has cleaned, it probably was
printed after the cleaning.
Tlie state has one print
linking an accused murderer
with the crime scene in the
Mossier murder trial. It is of
the palm of Melvin Lane
Powers, 29, alleged Incestuous
lover of his aunt Candace
Weatherby Mossier, 45, widow
of the victim.
The key state witness, Roscoe
Brown, was scheduled to speak
his piece today to an all-male
circuit court jury. The state
seeks to send Mel and aunt
Candy to the electric chair. The
murdered man was Jacques
(everybody seems to have
called him Jack) Mossier, 69,
who built a banking and finance
empire whose multimillions the

state claims the defendants
coveted.
On July 29, 1964, the day
before the murder, the state
says, Roscoe delivered some
packages about 2 p.m. to the
Mossier apartment, where Can
dy and her adopted son were.
He took some pictures down
and cleaned the apartment,
including washing the kitchen
drainboard and the dishwasher
thoroughly with soap and
water.
At about 6:30 p.m., Candy
went off in a 1960 white
Chevrolet, a repossessed car
from one of the Mossier finance
companies. So Roscoe left and
went to dinner. Powers arrived
at the airport here from
Houston on the 6:05 p.m. plane.
Mossier was slain about 1:45
a.m. next day.
Roscoe had cleaned the
kitchen area so well about eight
hours before the murder, the
state told the jury, that in the
post-murder Investigation “in
fact, upon dusting for prints on
the kitchen counter and the
dishwasher top, no prints were
found except the palm print of
Melvin Lane Powers.”
