Ladies Are Excused As
Senate Debates Nudism
ATLANTA (UPI)—A bill that
would have outlawed “an or
ganized invasion of Georgia by
outside nudist groups,” was de
feated in the Senate Wednesday
in favor of a less-specific, sub
stitute proposal.
Senators asked ladies to leave
the chamber during debate on
the bill, then heard its sponsor,
Sen. Roscoe Dean, explain the
dangers of nudism.
The Jesup lawmaker said
nudism is a danger to public
health, it undermines morality,
does nothing to contribute to
the state’s economic potential
and abridges the individual
freedoms of those opposed to
nudism.
Dean said he was primarily
concerned with a Chicago-based
group known as the Tropicana
Nudist Society, which he said
plans to move into Georgia.
The senator said scientific
studies show people join nudist
societies not for health but for
sexual reasons. “These groups
reject civilization,” he said.
The Senate then rejected
Dean’s measure and passed,

Equal
By ED ROGERS
United Press International
ATLANTA (UPI)The Geor
gia House was handed a bill
Wednesday that married rep
resentatives will find hard to
oppose—equal pay for women.
The bill, introduced by Rep.
Mac Barber of Commerce,
would make it illegal to pay
different usages to men than to
women for equal work. If and
when the bill will reach the
House floor is hard to say. It
was handed to the House Ju
diciary Committee for study,
and was promptly bounced to
the Special Judiciary Commit
tee for further study.
The measure was proposed by
Gov. Carl Sanders’ Commission
on the Status of Women.
Action on the House floor
Wednesday was hot and fast,
Speaker George T. Smith drove
the Representatives hard as
they considered a backlog of
big bills.
Ease Burdens
Two bills were passed to mo
mentarily ease new local tax
burdens resulting from school
legislation and a court decision.
One measure would boost allo
cations to local school systems
for maintenance and operations.
The other would postpone man
datory uniform tax assessments

PADUA, Italy (UPI) —Police
in 14 cities today investigated a
case of efficiency, Italian style.
Authorities pinned a "Casano

37, of San Do„a, saying he
received thousands of dollars
worth of presents from more
than 30 women to whom he was
“engaged.”
Police said a search of

40-2, the version by Sen. Robert
Ballew of Blue Ridge. Ballew
said his bill would accomplish
the same thing as Dean’s with
out clinically defining nudism.
The bill would make a misde
meanor “open lewdness or any
notorious act of indecency.’’
The Senate also passed a pro
posal that would force a jury
to decide whether a person con
victed of a capital crime should
receive the death sentence.
The proposal was part of a
bill that would drastically re
vise sentencing in criminal cas
es. It was passed 42-3 and sent
to the House.
Senate leaders said the mea
sure was one of the best pieces
of legislation to come before the
General Assembly this session.
Under the measure, a person
convicted of a capital crime
would not be given the death
sentence unless the jury specif
ically recommended it. Present
ly, a death sentence is manda
tory unless the jury makes a
recommendation of mercy.
The bill also provides for a
jury, for the first time, to re-
Bill
for one year.
The proposed postponement
of uniform tax assessment
stemmed from a court decision
that all property must be as- i
sessed at a uniform rate for |
tax purposes. If this were done j
without also lowering tax rates,
taxes would be doubled or qua
drupled in some counties.
The House also passed a bill
to broaden present sales tax
exemptions for industry to in
clude machinery bought by ex-j
isting industry for expansion. A
stipulation is that the machin-j
ery must increase production.
Amendment Killed
An amendment to include
farm machinery in the tax ex

ministration leaders had said
that would kill the bill.
a bill to put the state in the ;

measure would set up a “farm

The Senate also approved a
bill that would increase unem

for workers in high salary
brackets. The House - passed
measure was sent to Gov. Carl
Sanders for his signature.
The top unemployment com
pensation payment would go
from $35 a week to $43 a week
beginning July 1 and $45 a

Another House bill passed by
the Senate gives members ol
the State Board of Probation a
