The Griffin High Eagles will
make their final home stand to
night and a large crowd is ex
pected to Jam the gym when
Griffin clashes with Jonesboro
In a region game.
Tonight’s game, and the one
Saturday, could be the most Im
portant the Eagles have play
ed.
A good seeding in the Region
4 -aaa Tournament is hanging
on the games.
A loss tonight or Saturday
could determine whether or not
the Eagle- reach the Big Dome.
Tournament play is still sev
eral days away and Coach Chris
Jones, right now, is concerned
with Jonesboro and Lanier, 8at
today’s opponent.
Jonesboro is in Region 4-AAA.
Lanier Isn’t. Howiever, the
Poets have been designated a re
gion foe.
Coach Jones calls both games
••must" for Griffin.
Although the final league
standings are undecided, a win
tonight and Saturday could put
Griffin in the top four and as
sure the Eagles a good seeding
when tournament parings are
drawn.
The situation is the same for
the Griffin girls. Victories would
enhance Griffin's chances of a
top seeding in region playoffs.
Griffin will lay a 23-3 record
on the lino against the fine Jon
esboro team.
All five of Griffin’s starters
are still averaging in double fig
ures.
Larry Webb leads tha team
with a 10.5 average. The Griffin
center has scored 507 points and
pulled down 818 rebounds.
Richard "umer has a 13.8 av
erage, Frank Hinson is averag
in' 12.9, Randy Waller 12.1 and
Tommy Lyrr’’ 11.1.

Set Sunday
Archers from around Middle
Georgia will gather In Griffin
Sunday for a league shoot at the
Griffin Bowhunter’s rang* cm
North Second street.
Bowmen from Warner Robins,
Macon, Thomaston, Montlcello
and Griffin will participate.
The shoot will begin at 1 p.m.
and will consist of 28 targets.
Officers of the Griffin club to
day invited the publio to visit
the rang* Sunday and watch the
archers perform.

Torres, who had been suspend

Bolling, the slick - fielding sec
ond baseman who added 88
points to his batting average
last season, today signed his
1968 contract with the Atlanta
Braves for a boost In pay.
Bolling, 84, bounced back last
season to bat -264 after slump
ing to a career low of .199 in
1964.
A veteran of 12 years in the
majors, Bolling played seven
seasons for the Detroit Tigers
before being traded to the
Braves In 1961.

The Fairmont High boys and
girls advanced to the semi-finals
of the District Three Tourna
ment Thursday night by defeat

WASHINGTON (UPI) — Otto
Graham, new bead coach of the
Washington Redskins, Monday
chose Mike Scarry of Waynes
burg College as an assistant
defensive coach on the National
Football League club.
The 46-year-old Scarry, Gra
ham’s first appointment on the
Redskins, played for the old
Cleveland Rams In 1944 and
1945. He was a teammate of
Graham on the Cleveland
Browns In 1946 and 1947.

The second-ranked Duke Blue
Devils still might not get to the
NCAA tournament next month
if the rest of the teams In the
Atlantic Coast Conference get
their way.
Duke battled all the way
Thursday night to defeat North
Carolina State 78-7* and run its
season record to 8-1 against
conference foes.
But tne team with the best
eeason record doesn’t always
represent the Atlantic Coast
Conference in the NCAA
tournament. The conference
has a post-season tournament
to decide its representative,
and a loss to any of the other
teams In the conference could
end the Blue Devils’ hopes for
a national title.

LONDON (UPI) -Chic Cal
derwood, the British light
heavyweight champion, inflict
ed heavy punishment on Italy’s
Alfredo Vogrig Monday night
and gained a third-round
technical knockout.
Referee BUI Williams stopped
the scheduled eight-rounder at
1:38 of the third round after
Vogrig had taken a nine-count.
