Rangers Report Fires
In Lamar, Spalding
The Spalding County Forestry
Unit reported this morning a
woods fire in Lamar County that
burned a total of 15 acres on
Sunday. One tenth of an acre
was burned In Spalding County
in a wood fire.
Hie Rangers also answered two
grass fires in Spalding County
on Sunday.

Mrs. Dean
Dies Sunday
Mrs. Etta Colbert Dean, 76,
died Sunday night at the home
of her daughter, Mrs. Hudle Mae
Fouts of 614 East McIntosh road.
She was a member of the An
tioch Methodist Church In Ac
worth, Ga. She was bom in Paul
ding County, but had lived in
Griffin for 15 years.
Mrs. Dean Is survived by one
daughter, Mrs. Hu die Mae
Fouts; one son, Ray Dean of Ac
worth; one sister, Mrs. Ida Mc
Michen of Acworth; five grand
children; 13 great-grandchild
ren and several nieces and nep
hews.
Mrs. Dean’s body was carried
to Acworth today. Funeral ar
rangements will be announced
by McDonald Chapel.
Rites Saturday
For Dr. Bryan
Funeral services were held
Saturday for Dr. F. H. Bryan of
Reynolds. He died Friday. He
was related to Mr. and Mrs. R.
C. Banks of Concord.
Ex - Griffinite
Injured In
Auto Accident
MILLEN — Mrs. Clyde Dekle,
Jr., the former Miss Charlotte
Tyus of Griffin, was seriously In
jured in an auto-truck collision
near here Friday. The driver of
the car in which Mrs. Dekle was
riding, Mrs. I. P. Mills, was kill
ed Instantly. Mrs. Dekle and an
other passenger in the Mills’ car
were taken to the Millen Hospi
tal.
The three women were on their
way to Statesboro to attend a
district Garden Club meeting.
Investigators said the accident
occurred when a trailer truck
came over a hill and skidded on
to the wrong side of the road.
Following the accident the dri
ver of the truck said his brakes
failed. The truck struck the side
of the car in which Mrs. Dekle
was riding.
Reports from the hospital this
morning were that Mrs. Dekle
was resting well. She suffered a
broken ankle, a broken leg, bro
ken ribs and an Injured should
er. She also suffered a blow on
the head and cuts on the head
and face.
Mrs. Dekle Is the daughter of
the late Mr. Ober Tyus and the
late Mrs. Lottie Belle Tyus.

Mrs. Singley Of
Barnesville Dies
BARNESVILLE, Ga. — Mrs.
Maggie Eva Smith Singley of
Route one, Barnesville, died
Sunday morning in a private
hospital after a lengthy illness.
She was bom in Butts County
and lived in Barnesville for a
number of years. She was a
member of the Stark Methodist
Church in Butts County.
Mrs. Singley Is survived by
three sisters, Mrs. Bessie Vau
ghn, Mrs. Bertha Kitchens, both
of Jackson, Mrs. Ophelia Dick
erson of Milledgeville; two bro
thers, Albert Smith of Jackson,
Buck Smith of Barnesville; two
grandchildren, eight great grand
children and several nieces and
nephews.
Funeral services will be con
ducted Tuesday afternoon at
2:30 o’clock at the Stark Metho
dist Church in Butts County with
the Rev. Jack Buffington and the
Rev. Bill Coleman officiating.
Burial will be in the church cem
etery. Mrs. Singley’s body will
remain at Hubbard Funeral
Home in Barnesville and will be
carried to the church to lie in
state one hour before the funer-

Named Henry
STAR Student
Frank Dickerson, Henry Coun
ty High School senior, has been
chosen STAR Student for 1965-66.
He chose as his STAR Teacher,
Mrs. J. R. Parker, his foreign
language instructor.
The STAR Program at the
Henry County High School is
sponsored by the McDonough
Lions Club.
Dickerson, son of Mr. and
Mrs. James B. Dickerson of
Hampton, plans to attend Col
umbia University upon gradua
tion. He is a 1965-66 National Me
rit Scholarship finalist and twice
was chosen to represent Henry
County High in the Governor’s
Honors Program.
He has serve- as editor of
‘Nado, the school newspaper for
two years and is a member of
the Beta Club and Spanish Club.
Mrs. Parker, a graduate of Ag
nes Scott College, has majors in
Spanish and French and has
done graduate work at Emory
University. She has taught at
Henry County High for 10 years.
Mrs. Goddard
Buried Sunday
BARNESVILLE, Ga. — Mrs.
Sara Helen Pippin Goddard, 43,
of 2 Byrd street, Barnesville,
died Saturday morning at the
Monroe County Hospital in For
syth, Ga., where she was admit
ted earlier in the morning.
Mrs. Goddard had been in de
clining health for a number of
years but her death came un
expectedly.
She was born in Monroe Coun
ty, but had made her home in
Barnesville for a number of
years. Mrs. Goddard was a
member of the First Baptist Ch
urch in Barnesville and was at
one time employed by William
Carter Co.
She is survived by her hus
band, John Goddard, Jr., of Bar
nesville; one daughter, Mrs. Jo
hnny Ruffin of Barnesville; two
sons, Airman Jerry Brooks, USN
Pensacola, Fla., and Walter Ron
nie Brooks of Barnesville; her
mother, Mrs. Pearl Williamson
Pippin of Barnesville; two gran
dchildren, Stan and Susan Ruf
fin; three brothers, Walter Pip

Killed In Wreck
Traffic accidents In the five
county area of the Griffin Post
of the Georgia State Patrol Sun
day killed a McDonough man
and injured five other people.
Leon Davis, 20, a Negro, of
Route One, McDonough, was
killed Sunday night when the car
he was driving went out of con
trol and overturned. He died of
a broken neck.

T. King, who investigated the
accident, said in a report that
Davis was “traveling south of
Keys Ferry road at a high rate
of speed, lost control and the ve
hicle ran off the left side of the
road, traveled 360 feet and cross
roaded back to the right side of
the road and down the right *
shoulder and ditch for gOO feet.”
The vehicle struck some small
trees and overtursed. It stopped
against a large tree, troopers
said.
Damage to the 1965 model car
he was driving was estimated at
$2,500.
The fatality raised the total
number killed in traffic accidents
in the five-county area for 1966
to four.
Five people were injured in
a four-car accident Sunday af
ternoon near the south city li
mits of Griffin on U. S. 41.
Drivers of cars involved were
listed as Albert M. Lavender of
15 Wooodlawn avenue, Hamp
ton; Gladys Floyd Perdue of 322
West Chappell street, Griiiin;
Frederick N.MOser of Bluffing,
ton, Ind.; and Justin A. Roberts
of Moblesville, Ind.
Injured were Gladys Floyd
Perdue, who suffered a neck in
jury; Gladys Roberts who suf
fered a broken arm and lace
rations to her head; Mrs. Fred
Moser, who suffered a back in
jury; Martha Moser, who suffer
ed neck and back injuries; and
Justin A. Roberts who suffered
chest and nose injuries.
All of the injured were treat
ed at the Griffin - Spalding Co
unty Hospital.
Investigating troopers estima
ted damage to the four cars at
$4,100.
No one was Injured In three
other accidents in the area whi
ch resulted in $450 damage.
