January Up
In Griffin
Spending in Qriffin in January
was nine percent higher than in
January of 1965, according to a
report from the Federal Reserve
Bank of Atlanta.
The report is based on checks
and withdrawals at Georgia
banks. The reports states that
bank debits are considered one
of the most reliable indicators
of total spending and business
activity, since about 90 percent
of the business in the country
are settled by check.
The increase in January was
a nine percent decline from De
cember of 1965.
Spending in Griffin in January
was recorded by the Federal Re
serve Bank at $30,444,000 as com
pared With $27,827,000 for the
same month in 1965. The spend
ing in January was a drop from
$33,385,000 spent in December.
Augusta reported the largest
increase in the state with 39 per
cent. Other cities reporting in
creases included: Atlanta, 11
percent; Savannah, 19 percent;
Albany, four percent; Colum
bus, two percent; Athens and
Rome, 16 percent; Valdosta, 12
percent; LaGrange, 10 percent
and Gainesville, seven percent.
Declines were reported by
Newnan 13 percent; Dalton and
Elberton, eight percent; and
Brunswick, five percent
The dollar volume of checks
and ether withdrawals at Geor
gia banks was 10 percent high
er in January 1966 than tt was
during the same month last
year.
Sixth District, which includes
Alabama, Florida, Georgia, the
southern halves of Louisiana and
Mississippi and the eastern two
thirds of Tennessee, recorded a
six percent decline in bank de
bits in January 1966.
Contract Offers
Employment
For Retarded
A contract was signed Tues
day by the Department of La
bor and the National Association
of Retarded Children to place
1,600 mentally retarded persons
in on-the-job training programs
in the nation's retail chains.
The Griffin Area Chapter for
Retarded Children is a member
of the National Association for
Retarded Children.
Announcement of the major
breakthrough in employment of
mentally retarded was announ
ced by Mrs. D. L. Fowler, pre
sident of the Griffin Area Chap
ter.
“This demonstration is most
heartily welcomed by everyone
of NARC’s 1,000 state and local
associations, Mrs. Fowler said.
She said, “On the national le
vel, it signifies an awakening to
the challenge of the untapped
source which the country’s two
million able, though unemploy
ed, retarded represent.
According to the contract, whi
ch was signed by Secretary of
Labor W. Willard Wtrtz and NA
RC president Thomas A. Tuck
er, the trainees will be paid
$1.25 (or the existing minimum
wage) an hour for a 40-hour
week.
Employers will be reimbursed
by the government for half of
the amount, and upon successful
completion of training, the men
tally retarded workers will at
tain equal pay and status with
fellow employees.
